Position: LEGISLATIVE COORDINATOR (BUREAU OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT) – SHAKMAN EXEMPT

Overview

Cook County Bureau of Economic Development is seeking an experienced Legislative Coordinator who will serve as the government affairs representative and legislative advisor for the assigned department. The role involves researching legislation, providing policy recommendations, analyzing budgetary impacts, and communicating findings to leadership. The Coordinator may also research State and Federal funding opportunities and identify innovative programs that support County goals.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors and tracks legislation affecting the department and collaborates with the legislative team to research and analyze local, State, and Federal proposals.
  • Conducts legislative analysis in a timely manner and advises leadership on the potential impact of proposed legislation to determine appropriate positions.
  • Works with finance staff to develop fiscal analyses and understand the impact of proposed legislation on budgets, policies, or operations.
  • Reviews legislation for grant opportunities and researches innovative programs to enhance departmental functions.
  • Prepares confidential reports for leadership and assists in the development, support, and implementation of legislative and policy initiatives.
  • Acts as the legislative liaison for the department, coordinating communication with officials and governmental units.
  • Collaborates with legal counsel to ensure alignment on legislative strategies and supports interactions with the Board and other stakeholders.
  • Provides coordination of communications and interactions with senior leadership, elected officials, and units of local or state government as directed.

  • Assists in the coordination of communications and interactions with senior leadership, other elected officials, and units of local or state government.
  • Works in tandem or reports to the President’s Governmental and Legislative Affairs team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or higher.
  • Two (2) years of executive administration, legislative analysis, working for a governmental authority, or directly related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of experience in executive administration, legislative analysis, or working with governmental authorities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills on related matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when interacting with diverse individuals and agencies.
  • Ability to lead and cooperate on team projects.
  • Analytical skills to assess the potential impact of legislation on the County and its fiscal budget.
  • Proficiency in reading and analyzing a large volume of bills and resolutions.
  • Legislative writing and analysis, including grant research and writing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of the political processes in State and County government.
  • Experience interacting with legislators and elected officials.
Physical Requirements

Work is predominantly sedentary with occasional lifting up to 10 pounds. Sitting most of the time, occasional walking or standing is required.

Employment Terms

Position is exempt from county career service rules. Residence in Cook County is required within six (6) months of hire if the applicant does not currently reside in Cook County.

Located in the Loop District of downtown Chicago.
