, as a Medical Healthcare Interpreter – Arabic in the Interpreter Services Department
. This position is based on-site at Hyde Park. In this role, the Medical Healthcare Interpreter – Arabic facilitates communication between patients and families with limited English proficiency (LEP) and their physicians, nurses, lab technicians and other healthcare providers. The interpreter must be experienced and demonstrate proficiency to communicate medical information accurately in both English and Arabic, and have the ability to orally interpret and translate essential medical documents.
The role practices confidentiality, impartiality, respect, professionalism, integrity, accuracy, and cultural competence in serving LEP patients. The interpreter adheres to the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care and the International Medical Interpreter Association’s Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice.
Medical healthcare interpreters educate other members of the healthcare team on duties and ethical standards, coordinate with external interpreters when needed, advocate for patients to facilitate communication with referring physicians and embassies to obtain demographic and medical information for UChicago Medicine, and collaborate with various departments to assist international visitors.
Essential Job Functions- Face-to-face interpreting between patients and providers in a way that maintains original meaning
- Act in the best interest of achieving the wellbeing of the patient
- Administrative duties include dispatching and scheduling duties, collecting and entering encounter data for monthly reports, and participating in departmental initiatives
- Occasional oral translation of clinical/procedural documents or non-clinical materials into the patient’s language, as well as telephonic or video interpretation
- Educate medical staff and physicians on accessing interpreter services and maintain strict patient confidentiality
- Perform other duties as assigned in the best interest of UChicago Medicine
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited university is preferred
- Successful completion of a formal program in medical interpreting;
Certification by CCHI or CMI within 1 year of hiring - Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Medical Health Care Interpreter in an acute care setting is preferred
- Ability to sustain a busy and flexible work schedule
- Excellent grammatical skills in both languages
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, especially in areas of Pediatrics/Adult Hematology Oncology, Organ Transplant, Genetics, Neurology/Neurosurgery, ENT, Orthopedics, Human Anatomy, Physiology, and medical procedures
- Interpersonal skills with a strong orientation to customer service
- Strong understanding of cultural diversity and its effect on clinical encounters

In this role, we anticipate working approximately 40 hours per week, with a day shift typically from 8:30am–5:00pm. The position is generally 75% on-site at the Hyde Park campus and 25% remote from home. Weekday scheduling is expected.
