- Assists nursing/medical staff with preliminary assessment, education, and documentation of patient condition and presenting health complaint, including obtaining vital signs and other health information.
- Performs basic tests as directed by the healthcare provider such as EKG, spirometry, pulse oximetry, and CLIA‑approved tests.
- Informs the patient of test preparations and directs them to diagnostic/treatment areas.
- Assists medical/nursing staff with diagnostic/therapeutic procedures appropriate to experience, training and skill level.
- Responds to patient inquiries (in person and by telephone) and relays information to the appropriate clinical staff.
- Transports or accompanies patients as directed.
- Under direct supervision of clinical staff and following MD orders, completes requisitions for diagnostic tests and procedures.
- Assists in collection and processing of patient specimens and performs and documents point‑of‑care specimen testing.
- Performs necessary follow‑up to obtain laboratory/test results and records data.
- Maintains patient care environment in compliance with safety and infection‑control requirements, including ordering, stocking, and monitoring supplies.
- Performs and documents quality‑control tests on equipment as appropriate.
- Obtains pre‑authorizations and referrals.
- Maintains patient files and medical records; extracts clinical/demographic information as required.
- Assists other staff with office reception and business support functions.
- Coordinates and maintains organized patient flow.
- Reviews patient charts and ensures ancillary reports and required paperwork are available to the provider at the time of visit.
- Documents patient care information in the outpatient medical record according to standards.
- Assists with scheduling of patient tests, procedures, and follow‑up appointments.
- Provides cross‑coverage to other clinical areas as assigned.
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Current/valid medical assistant certification by an approved certifying board (AAMA, AMT, NCCTI, or NHA).
- Current/valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR certification.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
