General Internal Medicine (GIM) has a rich tradition at the University of Chicago, dating back to the founding of the medical school in 1927. With the rising prominence of the medical subspecialties after World War II, the Department of Medicine reaffirmed its commitment to GIM in 1969: ‘Every trainee must receive intensive, comprehensive training in General Medicine as an optimal base for advanced training, whether in a subspecialty or General Internal Medicine.’
Under the leadership of Dr. Alvin Tarlov (Chair of Medicine, 1968‑81), the University of Chicago led a national effort to reestablish academic sections of General Internal Medicine. In 1973, the Section of General Internal Medicine was organized to include separate GIM inpatient, outpatient, and consultation services. The Section of General Internal Medicine assumed responsibility for house staff training and for relationships with community hospitals.
A fellowship program was established for trainees interested in academic GIM and educational leadership. With the support from our Department Chairs since 1968, GIM research has flourished at the University of Chicago, with faculty recognized as national leaders in medical ethics, health economics and policy, and health services and outcomes research.
Under limited direction the Project Manager will coordinate and oversee execution of research projects and perform complex research related duties and tasks regarding the evaluation of the California Safety‑Net Population Health Management Initiative (PHMI). PHMI is a comprehensive healthcare strategy aimed at improving the overall health outcomes of Medi‑Cal beneficiaries in the State of California. Launched as part of broader healthcare transformation efforts, the initiative focuses on proactive health management and enhancing population health management capacities by addressing social determinants, preventive care, and chronic disease management.
Through care coordination, data analytics, and community engagement, the goal of PHMI is to enhance equitable delivery of healthcare services, reduce costs, and create a more integrated and patient‑centered approach to managing the health of California’s diverse population. The role of the University of Chicago is in the evaluation of this initiative through a multi‑year, mixed methods analysis around the implementation process of PHMI and the achievement of its intended goals.
- Manage the day‑to‑day activities and the overall workflow of the projects for the principal investigator.
- Responsible for having a working knowledge and awareness of all project components and initiatives.
- Assist with grant applications, proposals, and required grant reports.
- Manage Institutional Review Board processes.
- Provide training and oversight to the work of research support personnel, students, and volunteers.
- Build data collection instruments and databases.
- Provide support to the principal investigator and research team by recruiting subjects, designing surveys, planning and conducting individual and focus group interviews, and collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
- Plan and facilitate team meetings and webinars for on‑site and off‑site meetings.
- Work independently and within teams on special non‑recurring and ongoing projects.
- Provide technical assistance to collaborators in executing research procedures and in data collection.
- Maintain working relationships with collaborative community and research partners.
- Maintain and manage secure shared files for off‑site and on‑site management of research instruments and study documents.
- Manage project equipment and supplies.
- Conduct qualitative research, including but not limited to interviewing patients, stakeholders, or staff involved in the project, coding and analyzing interview transcripts, and drafting qualitative results.
- Collect, clean, and maintain datasets; analyze data with assistance and guidance from statisticians.
