The University of Illinois Hospital (UI Health), Department of Audiology is pleased to offer four Au.D. externship positions for the academic year.

The Department of Audiology consists of eight audiologists providing services across three clinical locations in Chicago: the Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Specialty Care Building, and the Craniofacial Center.

UI Health offers a comprehensive clinical experience spanning the full scope of audio logic practice. Under the guidance of experienced audiologists, externs develop increasing clinical independence while gaining experience in:

  • Adult and pediatric diagnostic evaluations
  • Ototoxicity monitoring
  • Electrophysiologic testing (A , ASSR, and related evoked potentials)
  • Newborn hearing screening follow-up
  • Vestibular assessment
  • Cochlear implant evaluations, surgery, programming, and follow-up
  • Auditory osseointegrated implant evaluations and management
  • Hearing aid evaluations, fitting, verification, and follow-up
  • Observation of intraoperative monitoring cases, based on interest and availability

As part of a large academic medical center, externs also participate in multidisciplinary clinics and team meetings, resident and student education, manufacturer educational sessions, and other professional development opportunities. No clinical skill is expected to be fully mastered prior to the start of the externship. We value curiosity, initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to learn while providing the mentorship needed to build confidence and independence throughout the training year.

  • Number of Audiologists at the site: 0 FTE Masters Degree, 8 FTE Au.D., 0 FTE Ph.D., 0 FTE Other Doctorate (ScD), 0 FTE professional support staff (technicians/audiometric assistants), 4 FTE Clerical Support Staff
  • Number of Audiology Students each year: 0 1st year AuD Clinical Rotations, 0 2nd year, 1 3rd year, 4 4th year Externships
  • Financial arrangements:
    None
  • Will interview travel be compensated?:
    No
  • Vacation Days: 10
  • Continuing education opportunities? Yes Externs are allotted two conference days annually and have opportunities to participate in meetings with hearing device manufacturers, departmental continuing education activities, and other professional development experiences throughout the year.

    No clinical skill is expected to be fully mastered prior to the start of the externship. Externs are expected to have a strong foundation in audiology and a willingness to learn, with clinical knowledge and independence developing throughout the training year under the guidance of supervising audiologists.
  • Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
    • Adult and pediatric comprehensive behavioral and objective assessment and counseling, both within a fast-paced clinical environment (ENT and Craniofacial Center) and in the Audiology Clinic for scheduled visits

    • Hearing aid consultations, fittings, and maintenance visits
    • Auditory osseintegrated implant evaluations, fittings, and maintenance
    • Cochlear implant evaluations, fittings, and maintenance
