Athletic Trainer

Position Summary:

The Athletic Trainer assists athletes with injury recovery, injury prevention and general development and maintenance of health and fitness practices. Collaborates with coaching staff to provide professional support for conditioning, weight training, and nutrition programs for athletes. Monitors training room and coordinates medical coverage for athletic events. This position reports to the Athletic Director. The Athletic Trainer upholds the mission and philosophy of the school.

Essential Duties:

  • Conducts an initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness; determines whether athletes should be referred to physicians for specific diagnosis and treatment.
  • Provides first aid or emergency care when needed.
  • Bandages, tapes, or applies ice to injured body parts as needed for specific injuries.
  • Assists athletes in performing and completing rehabilitative exercise.
  • Evaluates the readiness of athletes to play; approves participation in sports when appropriate.
  • Provides instruction concerning and demonstrates proper use of equipment.
  • Provides information and instruction to coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel, or interested members of the community regarding care and prevention of injuries.
  • Provides education to coaches, players, and parents on the importance of medical care and follow-up necessary.
  • Implements comprehensive illness and athletic injury prevention practices.
  • Provide athletic training coverage for designated athletic practices and home competitions.
  • Provides event coverage for IHSA sanctioned events, home and post-game follow-up, and in the event teams participate in state championship games.
  • Responsible for pre-event/pre-practice training sessions and taping which occurs starting at 2:30 pm Monday through Friday, hours vary on Saturday, for training sessions and pre-event taping.
  • Processes all application materials, conducts fitness assessments, and manages the assignment of Athletic Trainer staff with clients.
  • Communicates with the School Nurse when necessary, and works with the school's team doctor.
  • Assist with concussion management protocols and return-to-learn/return-to-play procedures.
  • Determine safe return-to-play status in collaboration with physicians and healthcare providers.
  • Ensure compliance with IHSA, school, state, and professional standards regarding sports medicine and athlete safety.
  • Attend athletic department meetings and parent meetings as requested.
  • Assist with emergency action plans and ensure emergency equipment is readily available and maintained.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays based on the athletic schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's degree from an accredited CAATE program.
  • Athletic Trainer licensure, certification or registration from the State of Illinois is required along with current BOC and Emergency Cardiac Care certification.
  • Knowledgeable in the NCAA and NAIA recruiting policies, regulations, and admission requirements.
  • At least 2 years, but preferably 5 or more years, of previous athletic training or related experience in a school setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thorough understanding of injury treatment and prevention.
  • Current CPR certification.
