Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Anatomic Pathology Technologist in the Cytopathology Laboratory. Here, you will be responsible for activities supporting the receipt and preparation of cytology specimens. The Anatomic Pathology Technologist performs gross examination and dissection of biopsy specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures and in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements in order to provide results of the highest level of quality to physicians and their patients.

This position is 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

  • Provides patient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurate performance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic stages.
  • Check specimens to ensure proper testing is performed.
  • Accurately opens, labels, numbers, and verifies patient identity and enters information from the test requisition into LIS for each specimen received.
  • Accurately enters gross description in patient report.
  • Processes cytology specimens including fine needle aspirations, non-gynecological smears, and gynecological monolayers using Thin Prep Pap test technique.
  • Prepares specimens for all type of special stains. Slide cover slipping and labeling.
  • Assists with the maintenance of all stains, reagents, and instruments of the laboratory. Maintains all daily, weekly, and monthly logs.
  • Utilizing, and troubleshooting all equipment;
    Thin Prep instrumentation; staining and cover slipping instrumentation, and all other laboratory centrifuges and instruments.
  • Documenting problem resolutions.
  • Proper use of LIS.
  • Ensures completion of quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance documentation.
  • Maintains section’s inventory, including both supplies and specimens and notifies supervisor of any shortages or problems.
  • Maintains open communication with the department supervisor, manager, MD directors and co-workers, particularly as it relates to important testing information.
  • Answers inquiries regarding specimen handling, results and other technical information.
  • Appropriately assists clinicians with requests and seeks out resources necessary when information is not available to answer questions.
  • Assists in new testing, procedures and equipment validation and implementation.
  • Participates in process improvement initiatives as invited by the supervisor.
  • Participates in educational and training activities to acquire new skills, maintain technical relevance and improve proficiency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in clinical laboratory science, life sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Must satisfy CLIA 88 personnel qualifications performing high complexity testing.
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and laboratory/hospital information systems.
  • Proven ability to use computers for data entry, retrieval, and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work within narrow time frames, outstanding organizational ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maneuver/lift bulky containers.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification or eligibility as medical technologist, (MT) or specialist through American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent is preferred.
