Job Summary

Prepares and assists the orthopaedic surgeon, fellows/residents and nursing staff in the application and removal of orthopaedic appliances, casts, splints and other dressings. Has an advanced understanding of anatomical structures and their relationships with one another, and is able to articulate descriptions of orthopaedic conditions. Responsible for ordering, maintaining, and charging of orthopaedic equipment and supplies, and supporting the hospital’s continuous quality improvement and customer service goals.

Job Duties
  • Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients in regards to their growth and development progress.
  • Applies and assists in the application and removal of body casts.
  • Performs dressing changes, removal of sutures, staples, Steinman pins and K‑Wires using proper aseptic technique.
  • Orders supplies and equipment from storeroom and outside vendors; keeps supplies organized and maintains appropriate backups according to division needs.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory and appropriate par levels of clinic supplies and equipment.
  • Processes special orthopaedic apparatus orders for patients from all units from outside vendors.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to the clinical director regarding new products; introduces and evaluates new products in accordance with hospital policy; processes and adds all new equipment to inventory following hospital standards.
  • Coordinated repair and preventive maintenance of all equipment.
  • Aids in ensuring a safe environment reflecting quality control standards.
  • Completes inpatient and outpatient cast room charge entry on a daily basis.
  • Assists in the retrieval and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical products dispensed from pharmacy to the appropriate patient care provider in a timely manner.
  • Documents changes to the plan in the electronic medical record or paper chart.
  • Trains residents and students under the direction of the orthopaedic surgeons in the application and removal of casts and splints.
  • Assists with clinic procedures as requested by the orthopaedic surgeon.
  • Prepares, sets up and dismantles specific types of traction as requested by the orthopaedic surgeon; stocks traction equipment in ER and on the unit.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A high school education is required; two years of college or technical school preferred.
  • Certification by the National Board of Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists preferred.
  • Basic Life Support Certification required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a hospital splint or cast room or in an orthopedic physician’s office preferred.
Compensation

Pay Range: $21.00 - $32.55 per hour.
