Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Center Optical Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in racking, cabling, stacking equipment, decommissioning, break‑fix, remote hands services, hardware replacement, and network transport optical troubleshooting. The Optical Engineer will ensure the seamless operation of our data center facilities, providing top‑notch customer service and technical support.
Key Responsibilities- Break‑Fix:
Work outside normal business hours (including nights and weekends) when needed. - Remote Hands:
Operate installations and testing using MOPs, vendor documents, technical specifications, and engineering letters; interpret and perform tasks outlined in MOPs; identify cable colors, indicator lights, and understand telephony, optical, and IP networks. - Cabling:
Pull long lengths of heavy cables in racks or grids; install, troubleshoot, and terminate Ethernet and fiber cables (CAT5, CAT6, structured, fan‑outs, single‑mode, multi‑mode, RJ45, LC). - Optical Testing & Troubleshooting:
Perform equipment placement, routing, labeling, termination, and local/remote testing using optical power meters, stabilized light sources, VFL, OTDR, BERT, RFC
2544, Ether
SAM (Y.1564), and iPerf; analyze and resolve network issues; assist card‑level troubleshooting and coordinate with control centers or back‑office engineers. - Site Audits:
Validate equipment placement and cable assignments; determine cable lengths; document results in proprietary databases and provide timely feedback to audit/survey requests. - Racking & Stacking:
Install, organize, and maintain hardware in data center racks following SOPs; use hand and power tools and understand mechanical specifications. - Decommissioning:
Safely remove and dispose of outdated or failed hardware following data destruction protocols. - Hardware Replacement:
Replace faulty components (transport routers, servers, switches, and other network & IT equipment). - Power Management:
Work with power feeds, redundancy, ATS; manage hot/cold aisles effectively. - Documentation:
Read and interpret cut‑sheets for physical network installation, ensuring accurate port connections and cable management. - AC &證DC Power Equipment:
Maintain and troubleshoot AC and DC power equipment to ensure reliable power distribution. - Oversight:
Provide oversight of third‑party onsite activities.
- Experience:
3‑5 years as a technician in data center operations or a similar environment; team‑lead experience preferred. - Soft Skills:
Self‑starter; works independently; team player; excellent interpersonal communication with customers; strong organizational and administrative abilities; effective written and oral communication in English; ability to multitask and remain composed in stressful environments; forward‑thinking, quick learner; adherence to safety standards; coordination across departments; use of Hyperscale systems and adherence to Hyperscale quality standards.
- Lift and move heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
