Senior Network Engineer
The Senior Network Engineer must reside in the Chicago area and will assist in the development and maintenance of GATX’s global and cloud network infrastructure supporting systems related processes required to meet the organization’s technological needs. This role requires a broad and versatile skill set, including enterprise networking, cloud platforms, security, automation, and hands‑on operational support.
Responsibilities- In conjunction with other IT functional groups, determine global Network hardware and software infrastructure requirements and specifications.
- Recommend, coordinate and perform the implementation of upgrades to Network operating systems, hardware, and support application tools.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain all supported hardware and system software (e.g., Cisco Routers, Switches, Wireless, Servers, Firewalls, VPNs, DNS/DHCP, and Netscaler load balancers).
- Perform Network installation, upgrade, and support activities with minimal disruption to the business.
- Maintain hardware and software inventory. Perform and manage projects as assigned.
- Support network infrastructure buildouts of new buildings, new shop locations, corporate building improvements
- Collaborate with IT functional groups to determine network requirements and design specifications
- Provide and coordinate support for Network infrastructure hardware, operating systems, and tool packages such that issues are resolved according to the standards defined in the established service level agreements.
- This includes performing, monitoring, and/or managing the intake, diagnostic, prioritization, and resolution processes, as well as maintaining the appropriate level of communication with the client and other IT staff involved in the resolution of the issue.
- This requires availability during non-business hours.
- Strong knowledge of networking concepts, security best practices, and cloud infrastructure architecture.
- Expert in networking protocols and the design/configuration of large‑scale data networking infrastructures.
- Knowledgeable in data center design and Cisco/Meraki infrastructure.
- Proficiency in Cisco hardware and Cisco virtual appliances such as ISE, FMC, Catalyst Center.
- Provide network support for AWS (preferred) and Azure, including secure connectivity between on‑premise systems and the internet.
- Experience in designing, implementing and supporting AWS services including VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, IAM, EC2, Lambda, S3, Cloud Watch, etc.
- Proficiency in defining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform to automate the provisioning and management of cloud resources.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Dev Ops practices
- Participate in the creation and maintenance of service level agreements that are developed in conjunction with the clients and other IT functional heads.
- Monitor IT network performance against such agreements and recommend and implement improvement plans where appropriate.
- Investigate and stay current with industry trends and best practices in hardware, network infrastructure and cloud services.
- Recommend and implement improvements to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Experience in Enterprise network environment required.
- Must reside in the Chicago area within one hour of the primary data center to ensure timely on‑site response when operational issues or emergencies require physical presence.
- Must have demonstrated ability to build quick and effective work rapport with others and strong team‑building skills.
- Prefer Cisco CCNA/CCNP and AWS certifications.
- Must demonstrate a strong sense of urgency, results orientation, customer focus, effective communication skills, and a win‑win approach to problem resolution.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Prefer at least 8 years’ experience in Network systems and problem resolution and at least 5 years of project management.
- Team player with ability to communicate effectively with staff in different locations.
- Willingness to continually learn.
- Travel 15% of the time to our shop and repair center locations.
As of the post date, the salary range for this position is:
$92,700.00 USD - $ USD
This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short‑term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
