Overview

Zurich is seeking a Property Underwriter or Specialist, Property Underwriter to work out of our Chicago office. We are also open to basing the role at our Independence, OH, or Edina, MN offices. The position offers hybrid work with a flexible schedule in coordination with the manager. The role will require visibility in the marketplace to meet with agents and brokers and in-office/market presence three days per week.

Travel is expected to be 15%–20% for this position.

• Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
• Develop, maintain, and collaborate with lines of business and other relevant stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) to support business retention and acquisition; work with customers and distributors to determine insurance-related needs and provide solutions.
• Support the organization's sales culture by serving as a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers.
• Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
• Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
• Qualify accounts to meet the organization's appetite and opportunities.
• Make broker/customer on-site calls with a clear, prepared purpose.

• Property Underwriter track:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 1+ years of experience in Insurance, Banking, Mortgage, Finance, Construction, or Market Facing areas; OR
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support; and
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal/regulatory environment; and
  • Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and applicable guidelines.

• Specialist, Property Underwriter track:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing areas; OR
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support; OR
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 1+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing areas; OR
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 4+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support areas; AND
  • Knowledge of line(s) of business and regulatory guidelines; knowledge of quotes timelines for new and renewal business; experience with Microsoft Office.

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Commercial Property underwriting experience and broker relationships in the Midwest
• Ability to effectively assess risk
• Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills; active listening; needs analysis; win-win negotiating
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and regulatory guidelines
• PC skills; CPCU and ARM a plus

The pay range is provided as a national average and varies by location. The combined salary range for this position is $60,000.00 – $. The proposed salary range for the Property Underwriter is $60,000.00 – $95,000.00, with a 10% short-term incentive bonus. The proposed salary range for the Senior Property Underwriter is $75,000.00 – $, with a 10% short-term incentive bonus.
