Position OverviewThe Samoan Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand and rendering the meaning of conversations between Samoan and English speakers across a range of industries including Healthcare, Government, Insurance, Finance, Utilities, Travel & Hospitality, General Business, Law Enforcement, Court, and 911. The interpreter processes information quickly and concisely, recognizes cultural differences, and maintains a professional and courteous demeanor throughout sessions.
EssentialJob Functions
- Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the interpreting sessions at all times.
- Remain calm during sessions in events that involve incoherent or upset primary speakers, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
- Follow client instructions and protocol to ensure expectations are met while protecting the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP). Avoid interaction with the LEP without client permission.
- Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including medical, insurance, finance, and law.
- Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.
- Handle calls that are highly emotional or stressful, including end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation or gender expression, while maintaining neutrality and objectivity.
- Provide consistent, high‑quality service within a dynamic environment that may involve extended calls or high call volumes.
- Fluency in Samoan and English with a strong understanding of cultural dynamics.
- Ability to assess regional and accent differences to facilitate communication with the LEP.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain accuracy.
- Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive subjects.
- Education or experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
- Minimum age 18 years and legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring future visa sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent; reading and writing proficiency in both languages highly preferred.
- Ability to adapt to new technology enhancements offered by Language Line Solutions.
- Must be able to operate a keyboard and mouse, and remain in a stationary position for most of the workday; ability to type or write with sufficient manual dexterity and lift up to 26 lbs.
- Dedicated personal device for business purposes: desktop, laptop, tablet (iPadOS or Android) or smartphone (iOS or Android).
- Operating system:
Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS. - Restricted brands:
Kaspersky products and Huawei hardware are prohibited. - High‑speed Internet connection with download speeds of at least 5
Mbps, upload speeds of 3
Mbps, ping no more than 300ms, and jitter no more than 30ms. - Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Operate a keyboard and mouse and maintain a stationary position in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
- Operate company‑provided software and systems to perform all job functions.
- Be able to lift up to 26lbs.
- May be exposed to moderate noise levels from computer, audio, telephone.
This is an independent contractor position and therefore not eligible for employee benefits. However, employees have access to a Senior Language Specialist, Interpreter and Technology Help Desks for support.
