On-Site ASL Interpreters

The On-Site ASL Interpreter is a full-time role based in Chicago, IL, providing in-person American Sign Language interpretation for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing individuals in a variety of settings, such as healthcare, business, education, and community venues. Day-to-day responsibilities include accurately conveying spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English, maintaining cultural and linguistic competence, and managing assignments in accordance with professional interpreting standards.

The interpreter will prepare for appointments by reviewing any available materials, follow client-specific protocols, and maintain confidentiality and neutrality at all times. The role also involves collaborating with acutrans, inc. coordinators and clients to ensure timely coverage, completing required documentation, and participating in ongoing professional development.

• Strong ASL and English language proficiency, with the ability to interpret accurately and fluently in both directions.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture and community norms, and the ability to interpret across diverse cultural and social contexts.
• Familiarity with professional interpreting standards, ethics, and confidentiality requirements (e.g., RID Code of Professional Conduct).
• Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills, including the ability to remain neutral, calm, and respectful in sensitive situations.
• Ability to manage multiple on-site assignments, arrive punctually, and adapt to varied environments such as healthcare facilities, offices, and schools.
• Comfort working with scheduling systems, basic digital tools, and documentation processes required by the organization.
• Certification or credentialing such as RID, NIC, or state-level qualifications preferred; relevant training or coursework in interpreting or ASL is beneficial.
• Previous experience as an ASL interpreter, particularly in community, educational, legal, or medical settings, is highly advantageous.
