The Section of Genetic Medicine continues to shape the future of personalized medicine with successful research programs focused on the quantitative genetic and genomic science. The Section provides extremely valuable collaborations with investigators in the Department of Medicine who are seeking to develop new and more powerful ways to identify genetic risk factors for common, complex disorders with almost immediate clinical application.

The Section of Genetic Medicine conducts impactful investigations focused on quantitative genetics, systems biology and genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology as well as through extensive collaborations of the faculty throughout the Department of Medicine, Biological Sciences Division and the University of Chicago. Led by Robert L. Grossman, PhD, the Section of Biomedical Data Science provides an intellectual home for faculty whose research interests encompass biomedical data science (data science and its applications to biology, medicine and health care);

computational biomedicine; and, biomedical informatics (bioinformatics, translational informatics, and clinical/medical informatics). Biomedical data science, computational biomedicine, and biomedical informatics are becoming increasingly important for making discoveries in the biological sciences, for improving medical care, and for supporting applications of AI to problems in biology, medicine and health care. Robert L. Grossman, PhD is the Frederick H. Rawson Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Computer Science and the Jim and Karen Krank Director of the Center for Translational Data Science (CTDS).

His research focuses on AI, data science, and bioinformatics. Dr. Grossman is the PI of the NCI Genomics Data Commons (GDC), which is one of the largest collections of harmonized cancer genomics data in the world and has over 100,000 users each month.

Job Summary

The Administrative Manager will manage the combined administrative, financial, academic and clinical affairs of the Section of Genetic Medicine and the Section of Biomedical Data Science in the Department of Medicine. The Administrative Manager will perform duties as the lead administrative officer for the Section including planning, coordinating and directing broad and complex financial and management functions of the Sections in support of teaching and research.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for the Section’s financial performance.

  • Manage the implementation, direction, and policy development in areas of finance (revenue/expense management), grants/contracts, human resources, facility operations, and fellowship training programs.

  • Develop or direct the development of accounting systems for the sections’ fiscal affairs, including systems and procedures to optimize income and control expenditures.

  • Provide the section chiefs and departmental administration with financial analysis and financial reports on a regular basis.

  • Conduct or direct the content of special studies related to financial management and accounting.

  • Direct the preparation of the sections’ operating budget. Develop estimates for staff, faculty salaries, and recovery, and all non-salary expenditures. Provide guidance and counsel to the section chief, faculty members, and departmental administration.

  • Participate with faculty and the division to identify and optimize revenues and funds flows, ensuring the integrity of financial data.

  • Manage the sections’ payroll/personal activities for all employees, including assisting the Section Chief with faculty members.

  • Authorize new hires, terminations, lay-offs, leaves of absences, and merit increases. Establish systems that promote fair and effective recruitment, hiring, evaluation, promotion, disciplinary action and discharge practices.

  • Direct and supervise the activities of the sections’ support staff. Hire, train, develop, conduct corrective action, and evaluate subordinates.
