Description

The MSL Team Director is responsible for hiring, leading, managing, and developing the National MSLs in the United States within US Medical. As such, the Director plans, organizes, and monitors his/her MSL team activities to ensure that the team delivers field-based medical support that is aligned with our client's products' clinical development and business objectives. This role will also facilitate and manage the team's appropriate internal information sharing and coordination (e.g., with relevant U.S. commercial teams and across all regions) to ensure that they are conducted in compliance with the company's internal and external policies, guidelines, and regulations.

Position

Responsibilities
  • Primary responsibility to provide guidance to the MSL team in cultivating current and future thought leaders in academic and clinical medicine at the local, regional, and national levels. The Regional Director will lead, manage, coach, train, and develop MSL direct reports to support high performance, and to align with strategic direction of Clients Medical Affairs.
  • Maintain clear territory KOL engagement plans and hold the team accountable for both adhering to those plans as well as ensuring collection and summary reporting of clinical insights and unanswered customer questions received from external contacts.
  • Responsible for scientific knowledge of self and team. The Director will maintain clinical knowledge of designated therapeutic areas and broad US market knowledge, including current treatment strategies, current and pending competitors, new therapeutic developments, payor dynamics, and other market issues/trends as it pertains to specific medical business interests.
  • Responsible for recruitment and retention of key talent. Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance that is consistent and timely to MSLs regarding their individual performance and progress. Sets clear performance metrics and addresses performance issues decisively and appropriately.
  • Ensure field initiatives and scientific interactions follow best practices that are compliant with all legal, regulatory, and company guidelines.
  • Lead the MSL team at national, regional, and local scientific meetings, including staffing Medical Affairs booths, facilitating scientific communications, gathering competitive intelligence, and facilitating the development of pre- and post-conference scientific materials.
  • Provide strategic planning, project management, and oversight of team functions.
  • In partnership with our Clients Medical Affairs Leadership, identify key deliverables, insights, and metrics that highlight the value of the MSL organization and communicate with senior leadership on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain an ongoing current understanding of pharmaceutical and promotional compliance guidelines, laws, industry-standard practice, and applicable regulations.
  • Attendance at periodic national internal and external meetings which may include national and international conferences.
Requirements
  • Doctorate level scientific degree is preferred (Pharm

    D, PhD, MD or equivalent).
  • 3+ years' experience as manager of field-based MSLs.
  • 5+ years of experience in medical affairs.
  • Scientific and/or clinical training in GI or Hepatology strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated effectiveness to work cross-divisionally as well as independently.
  • Product pre-launch and launch experience required.
  • Strong understanding of relevant policies guiding the Pharmaceutical Industry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, business acumen, and high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills, i.e., Microsoft Office, Access, and Excel.
