Controller Family Focus

Controller Family Focus is seeking a strategic and experienced Controller to join our leadership team. We are a $34 million nonprofit social services agency serving hundreds of families and community members across Chicago and Northeast Illinois. With significant federal, state, and local government funding—including programs such as Head Start—this role is critical to ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and long-term sustainability for our education and youth development programs as well as our family support services.

This is more than a traditional accounting role. The Controller serves as a key partner to the CFO, helping lead financial strategy, strengthen systems, and support program leaders in managing complex funding streams. The Controller will also act on behalf of the CFO as needed, including presenting financials to executive leadership and the Board.

What You'll Do
  • Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and financial close processes
  • Produce accurate, timely financial statements and reports for leadership and the Board
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and federal grant requirements (Uniform Guidance)
  • Oversee financial management of complex funding streams, including multi-year government grants and contracts
  • Lead cost allocation methodologies across programs and funding sources
  • Manage and coordinate the annual audit and Single Audit; serve as primary liaison with auditors
  • Supervise and develop a finance team of 7–8 staff, from entry-level to senior roles
  • Partner with program leadership to support budget management and contract performance
  • Step in for the CFO as needed, including presenting financials and supporting strategic decision-making
  • Identify and implement improvements to systems, processes, and internal controls
  • Manage the annual indirect cost rate application process
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
  • 7+ of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit accounting, including supervision of finance teams and management of government local state, and federal grant management
  • Hands-on experience working with Head Start contracts highly desired
  • Strong knowledge of Uniform Guidance, cost allocation, and Single Audit requirements
  • Experience managing complex, multi-program funding environments
  • Advanced skills in Excel. Experience with Financial Edge NXT highly desired
  • Proven ability and demonstrated experience leading and developing teams
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial audiences and senior leaders

Compensation: $130,000 – $150,000 (commensurate with experience)

This is a full-time exempt position
