Position Overview
WSP is initiating a search for an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Lead for our Illinois practice. The position will be based out of our Chicago office.
We are looking for an excellent communicator, highly strategic, able to influence and inspire others, and bringing a deep understanding of the Illinois ITS industry, clients and competition. We are future‑focused and are looking for a leader who can leverage technology and global resources to bring innovative solutions to our clients. The right candidate will be an empathetic leader who works closely with WSP offices and collaborates with staff across the country to bring the best ideas to our Illinois and Midwest clients.
Responsibilities- Build and sustain exceptional client relationships and industry contacts.
- Provide best‑in‑class subject matter expertise.
- Manage complex project delivery.
- Execute winning pursuits toward a sustained pipeline of ITS projects.
- Serve as project manager, deputy project manager, or technical task lead for ITS projects.
- Grow the Illinois ITS team.
- Collaborate with Local Business Leaders and the National Business Line to drive business growth in the Illinois market, focusing on ITS and V2X.
- Perform a range of marketing and business development activities within the region, including gathering client intelligence, leading pursuits and proposal development, presentations, manpower and fee estimates.
- Represent the firm in the market through involvement in client and industry events and associations to promote WSP’s capabilities, gather market intelligence and develop a pipeline of opportunities.
- Develop promotional and proposal material.
- Interface with staff from a range of other disciplines to support diverse range of projects across business lines.
- Provide leadership and ensure standards are adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
- Anticipate medium and long‑term client needs, industry dynamics, and changing market conditions, and develop strategic and action plans to address changing market conditions.
- Communicate ideas clearly with remote teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering or other related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in transportation and infrastructure projects.
- Minimum 5 years leading, managing and mentoring teams of ITS engineers and technicians.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven success in a leadership role.
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills.
- Experience as a Project Manager leading complex ITS projects.
- Strong technical skills relevant to the ITS system engineering process.
- Demonstrated deep relationships with State DOTs and local governments, contractors, transportation agencies and professional organizations.
- Demonstrated experience in managing the review and approval of documents and discipline‑specific deliverables, certifications, processes, and plans in a multi‑project environment is highly desirable.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Preference given to local candidates.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
- Technical experience in the design and implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
- Recognized industry leader holding prominent role in professional societies such as ITS Midwest, AASHTO, ITE, ACEC, WTS, COMTO.

CompensationExpected Salary: $129,600 – $220,300. This range represents a good‑faith estimate of pay for this position in the state of Illinois based on the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
