Hydro, Inc. is a global industrial pump engineering company headquartered in Chicago and the world’s largest independent pump rebuilder since 1969. We’re adding a Precision Manual Machining Specialist to our Chicago, IL (60607) team to craft, repair, and restore mission‑critical pump components on manual equipment.
A day in this roleYou’ll begin by reviewing blueprints and sketches, deciding on setups and sequences. You’ll move seamlessly between a Vertical Turret Lathe (VTL), horizontal and vertical boring mills, manual lathes, and /OD grinders—machining large parts to exacting tolerances. You’ll measure critical dimensions with precision instruments, convert readings into clear numerical records, and collaborate with engineers and shop teammates to troubleshoot and optimize processes.
Throughout the day, you’ll maintain your machines in peak condition and work safely under Hydro’s shop procedures.
- Custom machining of pump components in a job shop environment—impellers, wear rings, bearing housings, covers, seals, and pump shafts
- Setup and operation of VTLs, manual lathes, horizontal/vertical boring mills, and /OD grinders
- Interpreting mechanical drawings and determining the best machining approach
- Holding tight tolerances—down to 0.0005 in.—on large parts (including shafts 3–10 ft) using steady rests and proper fixturing
- Precision cutting, grinding, shaping, and fitting to meet rigorous specifications
- Inspection and documentation of critical dimensions using gauges and metrology tools
- Continuous evaluation of procedures for efficiency and quality
- Routine care and upkeep of machine tools and equipment
- Solid shop math and applied geometry for angles, radii, bolt circles, and complex layouts
- Understanding of feed/speed relationships and how adjustments affect results
- Expertise in setting jigs, fixtures, arbors, mandrels, centers, and clamps
- Exceptional attention to detail, manual dexterity, coordination, and control precision
- 5+ years post‑training as a manual machinist working on LARGE PARTS in an industrial environment
- Technical or vocational training in machining;
Journeyman status preferred - High school diploma or equivalent

Expected
Hours:
40 per week - Pay: $28.00–$35.00 per hour, plus differential pay; overtime available
- Schedule:
8‑hour shifts, Monday–Friday; night shift availability preferred - Work Location:
