About The Department

BSD CRC - Nursing

The University of Chicago (UC) Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM) was created in 2007 to assemble, integrate, and create the resources required to catalyze research and research training in Clinical and Translational Science. Its goals are to train scientists and health care providers to determine determinants of disease, test interventions, and advance clinical and translational science in a way that is ethical and responsive to community needs and values.

ITM collaborates with affiliated institutions to build infrastructure for clinical and translational research.

Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Clinical Research Center Nurse Manager, the Clinical Research Center (CRC) Nurse supports a wide range of clinical research projects/studies across study designs and participant procedures, including multi-center trials, single and multi-center investigator-initiated trials, observational studies, registries, and phenotypic studies conducted within the CRC.

Responsibilities
  • Works with participants across the lifespan, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Provides direct patient care: performs nursing assessments, conducts protocol specified procedures, administers study medications, and monitors patient safety during visits.
  • Collects and manages data: records clinical data, maintains case report forms, and supports data integrity for audits and monitoring visits.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, coordinators, and lab staff to support study progress.
  • Educates participants and families: explains study procedures and provides ongoing support across the study timeline.
  • Adheres to ICH-GCP guidelines, professional nursing practice standards, patient-centered care principles, and evidence-based best practices in interactions with research participants.
  • Reports adverse drug reactions and safety concerns to the Principal Investigator and study team.
  • Applies logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Interprets information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities.
  • Has a solid understanding of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatment options, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Education and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience includes knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications and Preferred Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of experience as a nurse in clinical research coordination/management.
  • Fundamental working knowledge of clinical research.
  • Knowledge of patient care fundamentals, including aseptic principles and techniques.
  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to read documents or instruments.
  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations.
  • Ability to solve problems by applying math or reasoning principles.
  • Ability to adapt to changing working situations and work assignments.
  • Strong phlebotomy and venous access (IV) skills.
