Placement within this range depends on experience, credentials, and internal equity considerations.

Position Overview

Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for either a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work in our outpatient hematology/oncology thoracic oncology program.

Schedule:

Monday - Friday, days;
Four 10-hour shifts (off day to be determined), no nights, weekends, holidays or on-call (may change depending on the APP position).

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
  • Responsible for the health outcome of an assigned patient population.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals in the area of clinical expertise.
  • Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Mentors graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to the area of expertise.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients’ health status by taking histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Provide direct clinical care to patients.
  • Prescribe/order medications, therapies; order/interpreter laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges.
  • Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
  • Document all care and education provided in the medical record.
  • Refer to other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Act as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise.
  • Integrate research-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making.
  • Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation.
  • Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
  • Maintain certifications and continuing education required for licensure and privileging.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and role model for "Patients First".
  • Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families.
  • Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff.
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
  • Provide formal education to both internal and external groups pertinent to the area of specialty.
  • Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for the specific patient population as appropriate.
Qualifications – Required
  • Master’s degree from an accredited school or college of nursing OR a master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois and current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Illinois, or advanced practice certification by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board, OR master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program and current license as a Physician Assistant in Illinois.
  • Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • Controlled substance license and DEA registration required.
  • Oncology experience either as an RN or an APP.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • 2 years of clinical experience in area of specialty.
