Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self, and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities- Completes required orientation program and unit-specific competencies.
- Administers chemotherapy, blood and blood products, fluids, injections and creates individualized care plans for patients under their supervision and care.
- Recognizes and treats cancer-related issues.
- Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities and responds to patient’s changing needs.
- Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant, and/or advanced practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
- Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
- Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and effective communication in an effort to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
- Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
- One year prior RN experience required.
- Current Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy certification required prior to hire.
- Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications.
- Current advanced cardiac life support, or within 6 months of hire for main hospital.
- Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
- Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
- Outpatient Ambulatory experience highly preferred.
