Job SummaryThe Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) delivers comprehensive nursing care to detainees, providing medical support, medication administration, and health education under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The role requires commitment to safety, patient confidentiality, and continuous professional development within a correctional environment.
Typical Duties- Provide and document nursing care for assigned patients including treatments, dressings, tier rounds, health requests, medication administration, and Foley catheter insertion.
- Utilize the nursing process: observe, document, develop a plan of care, and educate patients in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.
- Notify Charge Nurse, Nurse Coordinator, Supervisor, and physician of changes in patient condition.
- Maintain professional appearance and communication; observe unit policy and safety plans.
- Attend required in‑services and educational offerings to support professional growth.
- Maintain CPR certification and comply with mandatory safety, infection control, and other certification programs.
- Assist in supervising non‑professional patient care staff and orient new personnel.
- Respond to emergency situations, initiate basic life support, and inspects emergency equipment.
- Document patient observations and interventions following policy formats.
- Administer medications, wound care irrigation, and collect/transmit lab specimens.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment, ensuring equipment is functional and exam rooms are prepared.
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement and regulatory compliance activities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing program and hold an active Practical Nurse license in Illinois (or be able to obtain one within two weeks of start).
- Current CPR certification.
- Completed Illinois State Medication Administration coursework for Practical Nurses.
- At least one year of recent, paid full‑time clinical experience in acute or ambulatory care.
- Proficient with nursing equipment, medication administration, and psychotropic drug knowledge.
- Skilled in vital sign monitoring, blood draws, point‑of‑care testing, and wound care.
- Strong communication skills with detainees, staff, and interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, adhere to documentation standards, and apply nursing processes.
- Capacity for critical thinking, patient advocacy, and ethical practice.
