Position Summary

The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates professional practice models, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.

The Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from the patient and/or family to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to the patient’s changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and update the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and input from the patient’s family.
  • Share information and collaborate with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
  • Verify and implement orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/ or advanced practice nurses; document accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engage and obtain information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • Recognize symptoms, establish priorities, and respond to the patient’s changing needs.
  • Engage support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provide support and feedback.
  • Advocate for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Integrate theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.
  • Assume role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
  • Collaborate with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
  • Serve as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet such needs.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation. Compact and out-of-state RN licenses are not accepted.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) and/or other required unit specific certifications.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), or within 6 months of hire for main hospital.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills that facilitate therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and health‑care providers.
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
