Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $63.00 - $82.28 hourly. Placement within the salary range depends on experience, equity, and collective bargaining agreements for union positions.

Northwestern Medicine offers an opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work in our inpatient Trauma Surgery department. Inpatient Trauma Advanced Practice Providers support clinical operations by performing daily patient assessments, participating in multidisciplinary morning rounds, delivering post‑operative education, coordinating care across interdisciplinary teams, documenting encounters, and interpreting laboratory and imaging results. They collaborate closely with attending physicians and resident services to ensure continuity of care.
Schedule4 ten‑hour shifts per week with Saturday coverage required once every four weeks. No nights, on‑call, or holidays.
Essential Functions- Demonstrate clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
- Be responsible for the health outcomes of an assigned patient population.
- Consult with collaborating physicians and other health professionals in clinical areas of expertise.
- Develop appropriate educational systems for patients, families, and staff.
- Mentor graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care.
- Actively participate in quality improvement and/or research relevant to the area of expertise.
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments by taking histories and performing physical examinations.
- Provide direct clinical care to patients.
- Prescribe or order medications, therapies, laboratory tests, x‑rays, and procedures per clinical privileges.
- Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care.
- Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
- Document all care and education provided in the medical record.
- Refer to other disciplines as appropriate.
- Consult on other disciplines in areas of expertise.
- Integrate research‑based knowledge into clinical decision making.
- Exemplify professionalism in appearance, manner, and presentation.
- Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
- Maintain required certifications and continuing education for licensure and privileging.
- Serve as a patient advocate and role model for “Patients First.”
- Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate.
- Develop and provide teaching strategies for patients and families.
- Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff.
- Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
- Provide formal education to internal and external groups relevant to the specialty area.
- Participate in quality improvement or research initiatives for specific patient populations as appropriate.
Required:
- Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- Acute care certification required for APRNs.
- Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois; current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Illinois; certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. (Once licensed, may apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number.)
- Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – BLS, issued by the American Heart Association.
- Clinical experience in inpatient care management for trauma or general surgery patient populations.
- 1–2 years of experience in general or trauma surgery.
