Advanced Practice Provider (APP) For Pediatric Hematology/Oncology And Stem Cell Transplant Program
The Section of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation provides comprehensive, family-centered care for children and adolescents with complex acute and chronic hematologic, oncologic, and transplant-related conditions. Our multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, and other specialists works collaboratively to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care across inpatient and outpatient settings. The unit offers cutting-edge therapies, including hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy, and emphasizes individualized care plans, patient safety, and continuity of care.
Team members play a critical role in supporting patients and families through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, while fostering an environment of innovation, education, and clinical excellence.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant Program provides expert, advanced-level clinical care for patients with complex hematologic, oncologic, and transplant-related conditions. The APP performs comprehensive patient assessments, implements and manages individualized care plans, and monitors patient progress. This role also collaborates on research initiatives, supports protocol development and implementation, and contributes to the creation and maintenance of clinical policies and procedures.
The APP serves as a key resource for patients and families, facilitates care coordination across multidisciplinary teams, and ensures timely authorization and preparation for visits, procedures, and treatments.
Direct Patient Care Inpatient Responsibilities:
- Perform infusion of stem cells.
- Daily rounding.
- Follow-up on all pertinent laboratory and imaging studies.
- Maintain effective communication with subspecialists and inpatient team.
- Provide ongoing education to patient and family regarding transplant, including discharge teaching.
- Communicate with outpatient team and primary care provider upon discharge.
- Provide care as outlined in section's policy and procedures while maintaining appropriate documentation for the National Marrow Donor Program and the Federation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT).
Outpatient Responsibilities:
- Take histories, perform physical examinations, formulate a differential diagnosis and plan for selected patients seen by the Stem Cell Transplant team.
- Triage patient calls, formulate a plan of care and document in EPIC.
- Responsible for writing single patient treatment plan, treatment consent and applying BEACON plan.
- Perform infusion of stem cells.
- Maintain effective communication with subspecialists.
- Provide care as outlined in section's policy and procedures while maintaining appropriate documentation for the National Marrow Donor Program and the Federation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT).
- Coordinates pre, peri and post-transplant care for patients undergoing an autologous or allogeneic transplant.
- Coordinates matched unrelated and cord blood searches through the National Marrow Donor program.
Education/Nursing care Standards/Staff
Education:
- Complies with standards and regulations of licensure, regulatory and accrediting agencies.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continuing education in area of specialization and in professional practice.
- Attends relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars locally and nationally.
- Assists in evaluating the quality of patient care through application of the quality assurance process
Research:
- Participates in independent and/or collaborative research projects in stem cell transplant.
Other Responsibilities:
- Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
- Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
