Position: UI Health - Staff Nurse I - Hematology/Oncology Clinic

Staff Nurse I

The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates professional practice model, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.

The Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to patient's changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. The Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes required orientation program and unit-specific competencies.
  • Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/or advanced practice nurses by performing interventions as prescribed and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to promote effective patient care.
  • Recognizes and treats cancer-related issues.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to changing patient needs.
  • Educates patients and families regarding treatment expectations.
  • Advocates for patients, families, significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Demonstrates commitment to UI Health values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and a clean, safe, therapeutic environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    • Current AHA BLS/CPR certification and any required unit-specific certifications.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills that facilitate therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
    • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
    • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
    • One year of prior RN experience required.
    • Current Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Certification required prior to hire.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Outpatient ambulatory experience preferred.
    • Oncology experience preferred.
