Special Procedures‑Acute Dialysis Nurse

, as a Special Procedures‑Acute Dialysis Nurse in the Acute Dialysis department at our Hyde Park campus. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity
. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
- Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation.
- Performs a variety of clinical and research procedures with efficiency and high standards of quality; ensures that the proper protocol is used for each sedation.
- Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life‑supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians.
- Performs all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCMC.
- Rotates to clinical areas as directed to assist in safe staffing ratios; utilizes resources to safely transport sedated patients to an appropriate or designated area within the UCMC.
- Maintains hospital‑required nursing & ICU unit specific competencies needed to provide proficient nursing care; provides continuity of care for infant, pediatric or adult patients based on area of specialty. This includes assisting in the care of critically ill patients during sedation/procedural encounters. Administers high‑risk infusion and transfusion (e.g. chemotherapy medicines).
- Expert in assessing, treating and evaluating patient conditions specific to their work area, e.g., anxiety, pain, claustrophobia and underlying disease conditions. Evaluates and treats pain in a prompt, caring fashion and reassesses after each intervention, charting per UCMC protocol.
- Patient selection for sedation is based on established criteria developed through interdisciplinary collaboration by UCMC Critical Care Professionals; utilizes a sedation assessment to determine a patient’s suitability for RN‑monitored minimal/moderate sedation by identifying potential risk factors for undesirable outcomes. Conducts the assessment and includes data from numerous sources, such as chart review, patient physical assessment and interview, and consultation with other healthcare providers as appropriate.
- Analyzes patient data obtained during sedation to identify risks and/or complications throughout a procedure. Possesses excellent airway management skills to prevent adverse outcomes that could potentially occur during moderate sedation. Identifies changes in patients’ condition and reports findings immediately to the physician. Complies with UCMC sedation monitoring documentation protocols throughout the patient encounter.
- Performs other duties assigned.
- Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing.
- Associate Degree in Nursing
- Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
- Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois.
- Current BLS from the American Heart Association.
- Current CPR, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications.
- BSN degree or higher.
- Leadership/Management experience in area of specialty.
- Experience working in a research environment.
- 2 to 3 years of recent Critical Care / Emergency room nursing experience (or 2 to 3 years oncology experience preferred).
- One additional certification in area specialty.
- Preferred Certification CDN or CNN.
- Certified CDN/CNN within a year.
- Job Type: Registry (0.10 FTE).
