typicalduties
- responsible for the administration of all anesthetic agents and adjuvants to patients across cook county health undergoing surgical, obstetrical, and other diagnostic procedures.
- responsible for the management of airway and support of vital functions, including induction, intubation, and maintenance of anesthesia.
- supports patient ventilation, whether manual or via a mechanical ventilator, and monitors physiological responses using ecg, pulse oximetry, capnography, blood gases, and electrolytes when appropriate.
- continuously monitors and interprets patient vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and volume, temperature, urinary output, etc.) during anesthesia and surgery.
- maintains accurate records of all anesthetics, medications, and fluids used during the procedure.
- provides professional observation and supports the patient until recovery of vital functions.
- recognizes undesirable responses and takes appropriate corrective action, including requesting consultation by an anesthesiologist when patient exhibits abnormal response to anesthesia, medications, or the surgical procedure.
- attends clinical conferences held by the department of anesthesiology, including the weekly morbidity & mortality conference and grand rounds.
- attends anesthesia meetings sponsored by local, state, and national american association of nurse anesthetists and meetings of anesthesiologists when desired.
- participates in required educational programs for hospital fire safety and other necessary programs.
- attends departmental scheduled staff meetings.
- keeps abreast of current anesthesia trends and practice and increases knowledge.
- participates in departmental quality assurance (qa) projects, morbidity & mortality reports, conferences, and presentations.
- participates in instruction, supervision, evaluation, and professional guidance for rotating student nurse anesthetists from rush university nurse anesthesia program.
- anticipates completion of successful anesthesia clinical rotations, with increasing level during student nurse anesthesia education.
- performs other duties as assigned.
- currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state of illinois or able to obtain a license within two weeks of starting employment.
- currently licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse in the state of illinois.
- master’s degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program or eligibility to complete a master’s degree at an accredited program within two weeks of starting employment; must provide official transcript or a letter from the program director stating eligibility at time of interview. State of illinois advanced practice license and certified registered nurse anesthesia certificate required by the first day of employment.
- current state of illinois advanced practice license and certified registered nurse anesthesia certificate required, or ability to obtain a license and certification within two weeks of starting employment.
- must possess progressive experience and advanced knowledge in a specialized area of clinical nursing.
- must possess an active cpr card, or ability to obtain one within two weeks of starting; proof to be provided at interview if already obtained.
- must possess an active advanced cardiac life support (acls) certification, or ability to obtain it within two weeks of starting; proof to be provided at interview if already obtained.
