Overview
Provide direct nursing care to residents and supervise day‑to‑day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants. Supervision follows federal, state, local standards, guidelines, regulations, and facility policies, ensuring the highest quality of care.
Qualifications- Current, unencumbered RN license in Illinois and/or Wisconsin.
- Current CPR certificate or certification within two weeks of employment.
- Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures.
- Interest or knowledge in care of the aged.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English understandably.
- Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
- Capacity to deal tactfully with customers, family members, visitors, personnel, government agencies, and the public.
- Leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel.
- Personable, enthusiastic, and resourceful.
- Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Ability to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Adequate vision/hearing or use of prosthetics that enable these senses to function for job requirements.
- Ability to work independently with flexibility, integrity, and effectiveness with customers and support agencies.
- Good general health and emotional stability.
- Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, and customers in excess of 50 pounds throughout the day.
- Exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
- Assist in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing care for a unit.
- Assume all nursing procedures and protocols are followed per established policies.
- Supervise and instruct nursing staff to promote job knowledge.
- Ensure staff follows departmental policies, procedures, and dress code.
- Develop a written plan of care for each resident identifying problems and needs.
- Attend and participate in care plan conferences.
- Report concerns or complaints from residents or families to the Administrator.
- Counsel or discipline nursing personnel as requested.
- Make daily rounds to ensure duties are performed and procedures followed.
- Create and maintain a warm, positive environment.
- Participate in continuing education.
- Recommend equipment and supplies to the Director of Nursing.
- Place orders for medications and treatments following budget guidelines.
- Use PCC 24‑hour summary for recommendations and concerns regarding resident care.
- Fill accident/incident reports.
- Encourage physicians to review treatment plans and sign orders and progress notes per policies.
- Chart nursing notes descriptively to reflect care provided and resident responses.
- Complete assessments on admission, transfer, and discharge.
- Receive telephone orders from physicians and record them.
- Record new or changed diet orders and forward to the Dietary Department.
- Perform routine charting duties per Charting and Documentation Policies.
- Complete admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
- Prepare and administer medications and treatments as ordered.
- Review medication records for completeness and accuracy, and adherence to stop‑order policies.
- Provide professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, dressings, colostomy care, and care of the deceased as required.
- Orient new residents and families to the facility.
- Arrange diagnostic and therapeutic services per physician orders.
- Notify physicians and families of changes in resident conditions.
- Obtain sputum, urine, and other lab tests per orders.
- Take and record vital signs, blood pressure, and glucose checks as needed.
- Contact the physician for assessments, orders, incident reports, abnormal lab or X‑ray results, and other relevant care matters.
- Ensure notes and monthly summaries reflect the care plan.
- Attend staff meetings as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
