Staff Nurse I
The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates professional practice model, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.
The Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to patient's changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. The Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Completes required orientation program and unit-specific competencies.
- Administers chemotherapy, blood and blood products, fluids, injections and creates individualized care plans on patients under their supervision and care.
- Recognizes and treats cancer-related issues.
- Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities and responds to patient's changing needs.
- Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant, and/or advance practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
- Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession
- Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health's values through teamwork and effective communication in an effort to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety customer satisfaction and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
- Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the job training
- Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
- One year prior Oncology RN experience required.
- Current Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy certification required prior to hire.
- 1-2 years of prior Infusion experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Outpatient Ambulatory experience highly preferred.
