Position: Lactation Consultant Registered Nurse (RN) - Per diem Day

Position Summary

Acting as a registered nurse lactation consultant, the incumbent provides holistic care and education to mothers, families, and health care teams within the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics Office. The role operates on a part‑time schedule, covering 12 HR day shifts from 7am–7pm, with a minimum of five shifts every six weeks, including at least two weekend shifts.

Salary ranges from $38.20 to $57.30 per hour.

Major Responsibilities
  • Lactation Management
    • Serve as a consultant for lactation issues beyond the knowledge of health care providers.
    • Consult, develop, and implement lactation care plans.
    • Act as a liaison between the hospital and community, providing education and support.
    • Provide a communication link between the hospital and health care providers to coordinate patient care for lactation and breastfeeding problems.
    • Demonstrate appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation based on developmental stages.
  • Education
    • Provide education for mothers and families on correct lactation management.
    • Educate patients, families, and team members.
    • Develop and implement an annual lactation educational program for the healthcare team.
  • Process Improvement
    • Participate in development and implementation of the lactation program.
    • Work with shared governance on lactation matters.
    • Develop policies, procedures, algorithms, and guidelines specific to lactation practice.
    • Identify, monitor, and evaluate quality and safety issues related to practice.
    • Maintain the phone consultation system for lactation questions.
    • Represent the lactation department at unit, system, and community meetings.
  • Assessment
    • Collect comprehensive data on mother‑baby health.
    • Analyze assessment data to create nursing diagnoses and determine interventions.
    • Coordinate plan‑of‑care implementation with the health care team.
    • Consult to influence plan decisions and effect change.
    • Evaluate progress toward goals and health outcomes.
  • Evidence Based Practice
    • Evaluate and integrate research findings into lactation practice.
    • Maintain current knowledge of lactation research and apply it in practice.
    • Participate in lactation research projects.
    • Pursue continuing education relevant to lactation consultant practice through journals, workshops, seminars, conferences, and accredited courses.
Licensure & Credentials

Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois.

Education & Experience

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

Minimum three years of experience in Maternal‑Child Nursing.

Certifications
  • Certified International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required or
  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Lactation Specialist (CLS), Lactation Educator (CLE), or Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) with up to two years to obtain IBCLC on hire.
Other Requirements
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and timely decision making.
  • Collaboration as a member of the health care team.
  • Knowledge of lactation equipment and supplies.
  • Current BLS and NRP certification through the American Heart Association.
Physical & Work Conditions

Flexible hours based on customer needs; ability to prioritize independently and handle multiple simultaneous requests.

May be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases.

Lifting requirements: up to 30lbs for patient handling; up to 35lbs without assistance; use of patient handling equipment when necessary.

Benefits and Compensation

Base compensation within the pay range; shift, on‑call, and incentive pay may apply based on role.
