The APN‑Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, in collaboration with an anesthesiologist, is responsible for the administration of anesthetic agents and adjuvants to patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical and obstetrical procedures across Cook County Health (CCH), including John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Provident Hospital. The APN‑Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is also expected to make pre‑operative rounds to evaluate patient preparation, and to make post‑operative visits to monitor recovery.

In collaboration with an attending anesthesiologist, the incumbent evaluates the adequacy of a patient’s preparation for anesthesia and surgery, suggests primary and alternative anesthetic management plans, explains risks and benefits to the patient and family, and obtains informed consent.

$103,818 – $120,355 annually. Salary is commensurate with years of experience indicated at the time of application submittal.

• Administer all anesthetic agents, adjuvants, oxygen, anesthetic gases, intravenous anesthetics, analgesics, regional anesthesia, intravenous solutions, blood and blood products to patients across CCH undergoing surgical, obstetrical, and diagnostic procedures.
• Manage airway and support vital functions during induction, intubation, and maintenance of anesthesia.
• Support patient ventilation manually or with a mechanical ventilator and monitor physiologic response with ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography, and, when appropriate, blood gases and electrolytes.
• Continuously monitor and interpret vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, etc.) and bodily functions during anesthesia and surgery.
• Maintain accurate records of all anesthetics, medications, and fluids used during anesthesia.
• Provide professional observation and support of care until the patient regains control of vital functions.
• Recognize undesirable responses and take appropriate corrective action, including consulting an anesthesiologist.
• Attend clinical conferences such as the weekly Morbidity & Mortality Conference and Anesthesiology Grand Rounds.
• Attend anesthesia meetings sponsored by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and societies of anesthesiologists when desirable or permissible.
• Participate in mandatory educational programs for hospital fire, safety, and other required programs.
• Attend departmental scheduled staff meetings.
• Stay abreast of current anesthesia trends and practices.
• Participate in departmental Quality Assurance projects, morbidity & mortality reports, conferences, and presentations.
• Instruct, supervise, evaluate, and provide professional guidance for rotating student nurse anesthetists from Rush University Nurse Anesthesia program.
• Anticipate completion of successful anesthesia clinical rotations, with increasing levels during student nurse anesthesia education.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois or able to obtain license within two weeks prior to starting employment.
• Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
• Master’s Degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, or eligibility to complete Master’s Degree within two weeks prior to starting employment, with original transcript or letter of eligibility.
• Current State of Illinois Advanced Practice License and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia certificate, or the ability to obtain them within two weeks prior to starting employment.
