The OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive women's healthcare services under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer and/or Medical Director and in accordance with established clinical protocols, evidence-based practice guidelines, and the Nurse Practice Act.
The NP provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care across the lifespan, including preventive care, prenatal and postpartum care, reproductive health management, family planning, and chronic disease management. The position collaborates closely with OB/GYN physicians, Physician Assistants, nursing staff, care coordinators, and Teaching Assistants (TA) to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while improving clinical outcomes for underserved populations.
Responsibilities- Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform physical assessments.
- Accurately document all patient encounters in the electronic health record (EHR) according to organizational standards.
- Educate patients regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and preventive health recommendations.
- Provide comprehensive women s healthcare services across the lifespan, including adolescents, adults, and older adults.
- Perform routine gynecologic examinations, including pelvic exams, breast exams, Pap smears, STI screening, and preventive wellness visits.
- Provide prenatal and postpartum care for low-risk obstetric patients and collaborate with OB/GYN physicians in the management of high-risk pregnancies.
- Monitor maternal and fetal health throughout pregnancy and coordinate referrals when clinically indicated.
- Counsel patients regarding contraception, family planning, fertility awareness, menopause management, reproductive health, and sexual wellness.
- Diagnose and manage common acute and chronic gynecologic conditions within scope of practice.
- Perform office-based procedures within scope of practice, including Pap smears, IUD insertion and removal, Nexplanon insertion and removal, endometrial biopsy assistance, and other approved procedures based on competency.
- Order, interpret, and communicate diagnostic laboratory and imaging results.
- Prescribe medications and treatment plans in accordance with state regulations and organizational policies.
- Educate patients on healthy lifestyle choices, preventive care, breastfeeding, newborn care, and maternal mental health.
- Coordinate care with specialists, behavioral health providers, care managers, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Identify high-risk patients and participate in care management activities to reduce emergency department utilization, hospitalizations, and adverse maternal outcomes.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with regulatory, payer, and organizational requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, and clinical performance improvement projects.
- Participate in departmental meetings, provider education, and continuing professional development.
- Assist with the orientation and mentoring of clinical staff, nursing staff, and learners as appropriate.
- Collaborate with physicians, Physician Assistants, nurses, medical assistants, and other clinical staff to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
- Recommend medical supplies, equipment, and workflow improvements to support quality patient care.
- Maintain active licensure, certification, DEA registration (if applicable), and continuing education requirements.
- Master s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current Illinois Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.
- National certification as a Women s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP-BC) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC/FNP-C) with significant OB/GYN experience.
- DEA registration (or ability to obtain).
- Minimum of 2-4 years of women s health and/or OB/GYN clinical experience preferred.
- Experience providing prenatal care, gynecologic services, family planning, and preventive women s healthcare.
- Experience caring for underserved and culturally diverse populations strongly preferred.
- FQHC or community health experience preferred.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Experience with integrated behavioral health, value-based care, and population health initiatives is a plus.
- Experience with EPIC, Centricity, or other electronic health record systems preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and patient education skills.
- Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration abilities.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient-centered care.
- Technological competency and proficiency with electronic medical records are required.
