Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary health team.
  • Communicate follow‑up plan/disposition with the follow‑up health care provider.
  • Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
  • Attend high and low risk deliveries as needed.
  • Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals.
  • Stabilize and transport patients.
  • Demonstrate in‑depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to practice.
  • Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
  • Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
  • Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures.
  • Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring.
  • Participate in providing in‑service and outreach education program.
  • Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit.
  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
  • Serve as preceptor to APP students.
  • Evaluate goals and outcomes taking into account benefit versus burden, safety, quality, and cost‑effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals of the patient’s plan of care.
  • Have a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • College or university degree from an accredited school or college.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related discipline.
  • Current Illinois state licensure/registration and eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the MSO.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced nursing degree or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Completion of approved NNP training.
  • 2 years of clinical experience in level III or IV NICU as a NICU nurse or NICU APP.
  • NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner.
  • Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date (or ability to obtain). Current registered nurse license in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Once licensed, apply for a mid‑level practitioner‑controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Current Physician Assistant license/registration in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.
Preferred Competencies
  • Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, and line placement.
  • Excellent clinical, management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional, respectful, and compassionate manner.
  • Proficiency in EPIC and use of computers.
  • Ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners.
  • Ability to properly document and bill for services provided.
  • Detail‑oriented and able to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
  • Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with collaboration physician upon hire.
Working Conditions
  • Clinical care setting.
  • May require on‑call or after‑hours coverage depending on clinical service needs.
  • Exposure to human blood, blood components, and/or products made from human blood.
  • Exposure to infectious material.
  • High‑stress environment.
  • May staff other sites as required by neonatology coverage agreements.
