Job Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional care to a group of patients for a designated time frame, utilizing the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources within the institution’s philosophy.

• Perform all responsibilities and duties required by the unit specific to the scope of service.
• Maintain up‑to‑date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
• Complete initial assessment upon patient admission and develop an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and based on patient and family needs.
• Implement plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
• Modify plan of care based upon continuous assessment of patient condition.
• Consult with and keep the Nurse Manager informed of all activities, needs, concerns, and problems in the unit.
• Assist with orientation, instruction, training, and supervision of new staff members.
• Communicate with new staff regarding their developmental needs and provide feedback to the Nurse Manager.
• Clean and stock rooms including emergency carts. Utilize equipment properly and safely, maintaining equipment in good working order, and remove broken or defective equipment from use and report to the Nurse Manager or designee.
• Consistently document patient care with accuracy and completeness, including chronology of events during the patient’s ED stay.
• Verify and carry out physician’s orders accurately and in a timely manner.
• Exhibit proficiency in setting up, assisting physicians, and cleaning equipment with procedures (airway maintenance, central lines, chest tubes, GYN/OB procedures, lumbar puncture, orthopedic procedures, sexual assault, suturing, thoracentesis, poisoning, etc.).
• Perform hourly rounding on the Emergency Department for drug reactions, medication errors, restraints, patient complaints, and related issues.
• Implement procedures and theories specific to ED nursing; perform patient assessment and develop care plans in collaboration with providers, families, and patients.
• Execute plan of care and nursing interventions while modifying care plans based on continuous assessment.
• Ensure patient and staff safety through appropriate nursing interventions, adhering to safety standards, and correcting/reporting safety hazards.
• Effectively communicate and collaborate with staff, visitors, and families to promote a healthy and healing work environment.
• Provide feedback to peers to aid in professional development, increase knowledge base, and solve problems.
• Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient records/documentation.

• Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
• College Diploma in Nursing.
• Work experience in an emergency department or related setting.
