Certified Nurse Assistant, Medical Surgical

General Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse to provide care for patients and families with acute and chronic conditions in the pediatric, adolescent, and young adult populations. The NA actively supports the hospital’s quality goals and principles of service excellence.

• Direct Patient Care
  • Orient families to the ambulatory clinic area
  • Measure vital signs per department standard
  • Document patient data per department standard on paper record or in EMR
  • Empty fluid collection containers
  • Perform point‑of‑care testing/controls (glucose, hemocult, urine dipstick, hemoglobin A1C, HCG testing, PO feeding, bulb suctioning)
  • Assist with procedures and intra‑hospital transport
  • Hold patients, provide comfort measures
  • Perform ECGs and bladder scans
  • Communicate and interact with patients and families to foster a therapeutic and collaborative relationship
  • Intervene in anticipated emergency situations and adhere to emergency protocols
• 1:1 Observation
  • Maintain a safe environment for the patient, family, and staff through continuous monitoring during all activities including bathroom and shower
  • Provide age‑appropriate interaction, behavioral monitoring and de‑escalation interventions
  • Assist with eating, hydration, and elimination when needed
  • Monitor changes in behavior and communicate to nursing or other staff
  • Reinforce goals and behavioral limits set by the care team
  • Respond promptly to direction from nursing or other clinical staff
  • Participate in hand‑off communications and document care and responses in EHR
• Stocking and Maintenance
  • Distribute linen
  • Clean rooms after discharge
  • Replace canisters, oxygen tubing, and nebulizers per protocol
  • Obtain unit supplies and return unused supplies to central area
  • Stock patient carts
• Clerical
  • Assist with sending labs
  • Phone call/paging as directed
  • Coverage for clerk duties
  • Clean appliances, equipment, toys, refrigeration and blanket warmers; record temperatures
  • Assist with medication and pharmaceutical product retrieval and delivery from Pharmacy
• Compliance and Safety
  • Practice proper safety techniques in compliance with policies and procedures
  • Report employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents to supervisor
  • Respond to environmental concerns, maintenance/cleanliness
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings
  • Consistently adhere to scheduling requirements
  • Maintain patient rights, privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information
  • Comply with all related policies accompanying the patient safety associate role
  • Demonstrate ongoing competency through training, education and cultural competencies

• High school diploma or GED, with completion of a Nursing Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse certification program
• Ability to safely immobilize children and move equipment and patients when necessary
• Quick response to patient care situations
• Effective communication with patients, families, physicians and clinical staff, and meeting professional image standards
• Preferred bilingual ability
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association

High School Diploma or GED (Required). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

$19.00 - $28.50 per hour. This range reflects minimum and maximum targets for the position and is reviewed regularly to align with market conditions.
