UI Health - Staff Nurse - Hematology Oncology; Infusion Center

Position Summary

The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care in the Hematology Oncology (Infusion Center), integrating shared leadership, evidence‑based practice, relationship‑based care, and nursing excellence standards into clinical practice. Responsibilities include nursing care, medication administration, patient education, advocacy, and participation in departmental leadership activities.

• Develop, implement, and update patient care plans based on ongoing assessment and family input.
• Collaborate with the health‑care team to promote effective care.
• Verify and implement orders from physicians, PAs, and ANPs, performing interventions and documenting accurately in the EMR.
• Engage patients and families to obtain information and create educational plans.
• Recognize symptoms, prioritize, and respond to changing patient needs.
• Delegate tasks to support personnel per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act, providing support and feedback.
• Advocate for patients, families, community, and the nursing profession.
• Integrate theoretical knowledge, evidence‑based research, and clinical experience to provide quality care as measured by nursing standards and accrediting bodies.
• Assume charge nurse role when assigned, using appropriate resources and tools.
• Collaborate with other nurses to offer learning experiences for staff and students.
• Serve as preceptor or resource to nursing and support staff.
• Pursue continued professional growth by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies.
• Perform chemotherapy, blood products, fluids, injections, and create individualized care plans under supervision.
• Recognize and treat cancer‑related issues.
• Participate in special projects and other related duties as assigned.

• Valid RN license issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
• At least one year of oncology RN experience.
• Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy certification (or required to be completed prior to hire).
• 1–2 years of infusion experience.
• Current AHA BLS/CPR and other unit‑specific certifications.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Intermediate computer skills with ability to become proficient with the EHR.
• Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.

• Outpatient ambulatory experience.
