About the Department

The mission of Health Services is to provide quality healthcare to SAIC students and to encourage students to focus on their physical and emotional well-being. Health Services is staffed by board-certified nurse practitioners and registered nurses who offer basic medical care for minor injuries and illnesses. The staff also focus on health promotion and education and provide referrals to appropriate off-campus health care providers.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Health Services, the nurse practitioner provides medical care and health education services for the SAIC student population.

Schedule

This is a part-time position of 17.5 hours per week, Wednesday, Friday and every other Tuesday (or 14 hours/week alternating with 21 hours/week).

Responsibilities

* Delivers direct health care services to students involving evaluation, treatment, and management of a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions appropriate to SAIC Health Services setting and resources.

* Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations and diagnoses conditions; orders laboratory tests and interprets results; prescribes medications based on established medical criteria and evaluates outcomes; and provides patient education.

* Refers patients to off-campus medical providers, as needed.

* Provides input to the Director of Health Services on matters related to nurse practitioner practice, including policy, programming, compliance with standards and practices, legal liability issues, federal and state rules and regulations, and ethical and professional standards relevant to the provision of health care services.

* Maintains professional collaboration with designated collaborating physicians (as needed).

* Maintains accurate medical records and health information according to relevant legal guidelines.

* Establishes and maintains a presence on the SAIC campus offering health care expertise as available.

* Delivers workshops, training, and presentations or publications to enhance health and prevention on campus as available and requested by the Director of Health Services.

* Educates students about health insurance, including the accident and sickness plan made available annually to SAIC students, as well as serving as an advocate for students, as needed.

* Maintains close collaboration with the following departments:
Counseling Services, Disability and Learning Resource Center, Residence Life, and Academic Advising.

Qualifications

* Graduate degree in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner).

* 1+ Years of experience in the healthcare field

* Valid Advanced Practice Nurse State of Illinois License.

* Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner Certification.

* Valid Prescriptive Authority (per state practice requirements).

* Current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.

* Experience with college-aged patients preferred.

* Experience with providing gender-affirming hormone therapy preferred.

* An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

* Ability to deliver direct health care services involving evaluation, treatment, and management of acute and chronic medical conditions.

* Ability to obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, diagnose conditions, order laboratory tests, interpret results, prescribe medications based on established medical criteria, evaluate outcomes, and provide patient education.

* Knowledge of relevant legal guidelines related to medical records and health information.

* Knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations, ethical and professional standards relevant to the provision of health care services.

* Ability to collaborate effectively with designated collaborating physicians and campus partners.

* Ability to deliver workshops, trainings, presentations, and health education programming.

* Ability to educate students regarding health insurance and advocate for students as needed.

* Ability to maintain accurate medical records and establish collaborative working relationships across departments.
