The Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care is a clinical academic department at the University of Chicago. The Advanced Practice Nurse will provide comprehensive care to patients for the Pain and Anesthesia Perioperative Medicine Clinics (APMC) within the Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care. This position may float to off‑site locations (Orland Park, River East, Crown Point, Ind). Candidates must hold a current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or be eligible to receive one by start date.

• Evaluate and manage surgical and procedural patients prior to their scheduled intervention.
• Provide direct primary health care to patients in collaboration with supervising physician(s) and the multidisciplinary health team, including identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.
• Assist anesthesiologists through organized instruction and supervised practice.
• Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments, develop patient care plans, take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record findings.
• Screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission and make referrals to other disciplines as indicated.
• Write progress notes, prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.
• Obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care and develop therapeutic relationships with patients.
• Perform and document physical examinations in accordance with government guidelines and personalize therapies.
• Order appropriate laboratory tests and diagnostic studies according to clinical diagnosis, pathways, and protocols.
• Collaborate and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of care.
• Select appropriate communication approaches to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
• Pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
• Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
• Participate in health education in the community and basic science or clinical research projects, preparing statistical reports and analyses as directed.
• Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.
• Participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures unique to specific clinical settings.
• Practice procedure privileges detailed in the APN’s Delineation of Privileges.
• Evaluate goals and outcomes considering benefit‑versus‑burden, safety, quality, and cost‑effectiveness.
• Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve patient care goals.
• Perform other related work as needed.

Education: College or university degree from an accredited institution.

Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a related discipline.

Certifications: Current or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration; eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office.

• Education: Advanced degree in nursing from an accredited institution, or equivalent if license received prior to July 1, 2001.
• Experience: Previous clinical experience in an ICU setting.

• Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership, and teaching skills.
• Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
• Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
• Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
• Willingness to apply for a mid‑level practitioner controlled substance license and DEA number when licensed.
• Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
• Strong interpersonal, independent working, organizational, written and verbal communication, and analytical skills.
• Proficiency in computer usage.
