The Nursing Supervisor / Intake Coordinator, under the leadership of the Chief Nursing Officer or designee, provides hospital-wide operational nursing oversight and coordinates clinically appropriate patient flow, bed placement, staffing, capacity management, and escalation during assigned shifts. The position also serves as a central access point for behavioral health screening, case disposition, referral, authorization, and continuity-of-care linkage.
The position exercises independent clinical judgment and collaborates with physicians, nursing leadership, Patient Access, the Emergency Department, Case Management, Surgical Services, Behavioral Health Services, ancillary departments, and outside agencies to ensure timely placement in the appropriate level of care. All responsibilities are performed confidentially and in accordance with the Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code, applicable federal and state requirements, hospital policies and bylaws, accreditation requirements, and the mission and values of Insight Hospital and Medical Center.

III. DESCRIPTIONThe Nursing Supervisor / Intake Coordinator is accountable for maintaining safe, coordinated hospital operations while managing behavioral health intake and access functions. The role combines shift-based nursing supervision, patient-flow and bed-placement authority, staffing and surge coordination, behavioral health screening and referral, insurance authorization, clinical documentation, and continuity-of-care activities. The position serves as the clinical and operational liaison among patients, families, physicians, nursing units, hospital departments, and community agencies and escalates concerns to the appropriate leader or Physician Advisor when necessary.

- Provides hospital-wide operational oversight and situational awareness during assigned shifts. Coordinates with nursingleaders, physicians, Patient Access, Emergency, Case Management, Surgical Services, Behavioral Health, andancillary departments to support safe operations, timely care, customer satisfaction, and effective use of hospital capacity. Dual role will vary based on hospital needs.
- Assess clinical status and acuity to direct appropriate patient placement and movement. Prioritizes inpatient, observation, outpatient-in-a-bed, critical care, and internal or external transfer requests; manages the bed-coordination process; rounds on units to validate pending and actual discharges; and applies approved medical-necessity and placement criteria.
- Screens for incoming telephone calls, walk-in requests, and internal referrals for behavioral health services. Determines the presenting need, urgency, available resources, appropriateness of the hospital as a provider, and required level of care. Applies knowledge of mental health, substance-use disorders, developmental norms, and age-specific needs; provides resources and active linkage when services are not available through the organization.
- Coordinates with case-management and registration to verify verification of medical coverage, initial authorization when required, collection of relevant clinical information from patients, providers, and referring facilities, and accurate documentation in the electronic medical record. Communicates concise and complete referral information to the receiving clinician or service.
- Ensures safe transitions of care by reviewing the anticipated discharge plan prior to patient transfer, identifying potential safety concerns or barriers to discharge, and collaborating with case management, social work, crisis services, and other appropriate disciplines to support a safe and appropriate disposition.
