Description:
This unit has 54 beds with two semi-private rooms. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during the night shift. Common types of patients include those with stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience conditions, along with some medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips, including Heparin titrated drip based on PTT.
There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who does not take an assignment unless necessary to maintain safe staffing ratios. A house supervisor is also present 24/7. There are nurse aides/patient care techs assigned to this unit with ratios of 1:9-10 during days, 1:9-10 during evenings, and 1:10-12 may troubleshoot respiratory equipment for stable patients only, though such cases are rare.
Telemetry monitors are used throughout the unit, and nurses are not required to read the strips. Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours, with weekend shifts required every other weekend and holidays required every other. RNs may float in rotation with the rest of the staff and will be assigned only to areas for which they are trained. There is no specific scrub color requirement;
however, tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are allowed. Unit-specific orientation includes two days of training with an educator and hands-on patient care under the guidance of a preceptor.
