Position: Hematology Technician I (Overnight Shift)

Hematology Technician I

Work Shift:

12am-8:30am, Monday - Saturday (5 days). Target Pay: $20.67 an hour.

Job Purpose / Overview

The Hematology Technician I performs cytology accessioning, staining, laboratory testing, preparing samples, setting up instruments, running tests, reading and releasing results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Build CBC/UA loads, slide preparation and staining.
  • Assist with prepping Avian / Exotic specimens as requested.
  • Spin manual hematocrits.
  • Prepare blood smears and perform re-checks as directed using LTP when necessary; manage the LTP process.
  • Perform all required tests including Destiny Testing (PT and PTT, Fibrinogen, UA Front End, Plasma protein, Feline blood typing).
  • Verify equipment with control samples.
  • Accurately match slides with respective TRF’s.
  • Build cytology and path review loads per protocol; ensure Load Distribution Log is completed accurately each shift.
  • Transfer cytology table loads as required.
  • Accession and label all paperwork, specimen slides, tubes and jars.
  • Gross and prepare smears, mono‑layered cytospins and cell blocks; pack cases for in‑house pathologists and for transportation.
  • Monitor and reconcile pending, distribution list and complete daily distribution email.
  • Arrange bar‑coded racks correctly and load onto instruments.
  • Perform required quality control per QA guidelines, including instrument maintenance and temperature charts.
  • Run all needed quality control and calibration by department.
  • Read, understand and follow applicable SOPs, safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Restock supplies as needed.
  • Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
  • Consult with senior peers on non‑complex tasks to learn through experience.
  • May be asked to participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 6 months experience as a Hematology Lab Aide.
  • Or 2‒4 year degree in science‑related field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and operating lab instruments.
  • Attention to detail; ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn new assignments efficiently and support other teams during low demand periods.
  • Communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Positive, can‑do attitude.
  • Basic math, interpretive and analytical skills.
  • Strong data entry skills.
  • Personal computer skills, proficient use of Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software.
Working Conditions
  • Stationary position for up to 2 hours; must remain in a stationary position.
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch.
  • Required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Observe details at close range.
  • Extended hours may be needed.
  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards mitigated by mandatory PPE.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic agents and hazardous chemicals; PPE required.
