Project Description

This project aims to document and synthesize taxonomic, morphological, and visual information for South American amphibian type specimens housed at the Field Museum through the creation of a comprehensive illustrated catalog. By integrating collections-based research with science education and outreach, the project will improve accessibility to primary biodiversity data while supporting ongoing taxonomic and systematic studies.

Position Summary

The High School Intern will participate in a collections-based research project focused on documenting South American amphibian type specimens housed at the Field Museum. The intern will gain hands-on experience in museum curation, biodiversity data generation, and scientific documentation while contributing to the development of an illustrated taxonomic catalog.

Duties and Responsibilities

Photograph amphibian specimens using standardized museum protocols

Assist with basic image editing and file organization

Collect standard morphological measurements under supervision

Perform introductory data entry into project databases and spreadsheets

Follow museum collections handling and data management guidelines

Minimum Education Required

Current high school student

Minimum Experience Required

No prior museum or research experience required (training will be provided)

Skills and Qualifications

Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized protocols

Basic computer skills (file management, spreadsheets, image viewing/editing)

Interest in biology, natural history, or museum science

Ability to work carefully with scientific specimens

Depending on the interns efforts and the outcomes of the project, we anticipate that this work may result in their meaningful contribution to a peer-reviewed publication, providing experience in scientific writing, collaboration, and public-facing communication of biodiversity research.

If selected, interns will be expected to attend an on-site HR orientation on June 22nd, 2026. Work on the internship will continue through July 31, 2026. Hourly rate of $17.25 @ 35 hours a week for 6 weeks.

Intern candidates will be contacted and selected through email communication and virtual interviews conducted via Zoom. This internship is intended for female and non-binary identifying students.
