BSD SRF - Light Microscopy

About the Department

The Integrated Light Microscopy Facility (ILMF) is a supervised, user-based Shared Resource providing state-of-the-art microscopy imaging and analysis capabilities to University investigators. The IMF offers widefield, confocal and light sheet microscopy, as well as super-resolution technologies (e.g., stimulated emission depletion, localization, and structured light) and image analysis software (Imaris, Huygens, multiple open-source packages). The major objective of the ILMF is to provide imaging expertise and instrumentation to advance investigator-driven basic and translational cancer research at the University of Chicago.

Job Summary

The job participates in scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings. The Imaging Research Analyst II will assist users in the Light Microscopy Core, with a particular concentration in building integrated imaging-to-analysis pipelines.

This position is responsible for operating and maintaining high-end commercial fluorescent microscopes; training new users in design of fluorescent microscopy experiments, proper use of research microscopes; and the responsible and reproducible collection and analysis of image-based data.

Responsibilities

* Manages the operation and troubleshooting of existing and future core equipment as well as any required maintenance.

* Responsible for training users in the use of core equipment including best practices for scientific imaging and image processing.

* Responsible for running image processing software, including Imaris, Image

J/Fiji, QuPath, cellpose and others.

* Trains users to use image processing software, including creation of Java-based analysis pipelines for large datasets and best practices for presenting images and gathering scientifically valid results.

* Assists with the whole slide scanning service.

* Manages record keeping including usage and publications.

* Takes responsibility for the coordination of demos of equipment and software with commercial vendors.

* Assists the Technical Director with future capital improvements including selecting technology, preliminary data collection and grant writing.

* Ensures that lab and office supplies are ordered as necessary.

* Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan.

* Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

* Takes responsibility for the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Acquires higher-level skills and knowledge in the process.

* Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
