Manager of Research Laboratory

The Manager of Research Laboratory provides daily operational oversight and support to the research laboratory of Dr. Aaron Hamvas' Lab in the Perinatal Origins of Disease department. Responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining and monitoring policies and procedures for this laboratory. Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory protocols, procedures and practices. Maintains excellent public relations for all laboratory services.
Assigns work and supervises lab personnel and reviews technical operations ensuring that all processes, protocols and procedures are quality controlled and functioning up to standards.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the research laboratory.
- Provide direct supervision and support for laboratory staff, maintain adequate staffing levels and manage technical operations.
- Assist with grant applications and serve as the contact person for funded grants.
- Maintain accurate and timely laboratory budgets and financial reports.
- Place and track all purchasing orders.
- Maintain the database of research regents, drugs and chemicals.
- Ensure effective communication with physicians, reference labs, and other staff members regarding specimen collection, documentation, scheduling, etc.
- Participate in planning experiments and coordinate laboratory team efforts.
- Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and format data and/or test reports.
- Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co‑workers from biohazardous materials, including blood‑borne pathogens.
- Comply with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
- Monitor biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of hazardous agents and radiation sources.
- Perform other job functions as assigned.
- Broad knowledge of laboratory research skills typically acquired through a full 4‑year course of study in an accredited college or university, leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in a scientific major or related or appropriate combination of education and experience.
- At least 6 years of lab/bench or other relevant experience.
- Proven leadership qualities with at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Proven ability to develop effective systems.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and with different personalities and educational levels.
- Ability to handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously without constant direction.
- Excellent command of the English language; medical and scientific terminology required.
- Working knowledge of common word processing, data management, and graphics software packages.
Minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific major or related field.
