Job OverviewThe Senior Medical Science Liaison (Sr. MSL) is a field‑based scientific expert strategically supporting the medical and scientific objectives of Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease’s product(s) across the product life cycle. The individual is a peer scientific expert who communicates accurate and applicable science to healthcare practitioners (HCPs) within a geographic area, managing professional relationships with HCPs and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and identifying collaboration opportunities with Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease.
The Senior MSL mentors other MSLs in engagement plans, combines business acumen and clinical expertise, and serves as a peer‑to‑peer liaison internally to Medical Directors, USMA Leadership Team, cross‑functional partners and externally to HCPs and KOLs. The individual anticipates roadblocks and barriers and identifies ways to overcome them with limited leadership input.
- Evaluate territory to profile and identify HCPs to engage, including important centers of excellence.
- Develop clear, succinct, impactful HCP engagement plans aligned with medical strategic goals, evaluating and refining them as needed per quarterly focus priorities.
- Gain and maintain HCP trust by effectively providing scientific/medical information on the company’s products and disease states.
- Gather and disseminate HCP insights internally to inform medical strategy, creating new opportunities for engagement approaches or resource development.
- Develop strong working relationships in external business settings.
- Keep current with scientific knowledge within assigned products and therapeutic area; integrate insights from HCPs and literature to forecast trends and escalates actionable information to stakeholders.
- Support scientific exchange of product/disease state with external stakeholders (HCPs) as needed.
- Provide and educate on relevant scientific information to internal teams and functions as appropriate.
- Demonstrate proficient understanding of real‑world evidence and HEOR.
- Demonstrate proficiency in clinical study design and protocols.
- Ensure HCPs and stakeholders receive balanced clinical and scientific information.
- Support externally sponsored research and clinical trials as appropriate.
- Maintain knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system and its impact on rare disease ecosystem, managed markets, and information flow in managed care and government organizations.
- Travel within region 3–4 days per week, with 1–2 office days per week; travel minimum ~70% time; required to live within the territory.
- Work in a field environment and, as typical of a field‑based role, be able to travel by public transportation, automobile, train, or plane, and work comfortably in a clinical setting; use computer and communicate via phone, video, and messaging.
- 3+ years of professional experience in a clinical setting or related therapeutic area.
- BS Degree in Biological Sciences or related major.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
- Strong personal initiative and ability to work independently.
- Experienced in cross‑functional teams, time management, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated high performance as an MSL and independent decision‑making skills.
- MD, PharmD, or PhD in biological sciences strongly preferred or minimum 2 years track record of success as an MSL.
- Experience in Neurology preferred.
- Experience in therapeutic areas relating to biologics/therapies in development, recently launched, or marketed.
- Office is home‑based.
- Travel within territory on a regular basis, including frequent overnight and weekend travel.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
- All activities must be conducted per Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease policies.
The annual base pay ranges from $174,455 to $261,682. Eligibility for short‑term incentive bonuses, equity‑based awards for salaried roles, and commissions for sales roles. Benefits include qualified retirement programs, paid time off (vacation, holidays, and leaves), as well as health, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the applicable plans.
