The Manager, Clinical Research role provides leadership, strategic management, and administration for clinical and translational research. The role supervises and manages research staff in the divisional unit and serves as the key operational interface between funding agencies, the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute (SMCRI), the research team, and principal investigators. Working with a multidisciplinary team of physicians and staff, the Manager maintains an environment that encourages customer service and promotes employee satisfaction, while modeling and supporting the principles of good clinical practice with the research team.
Responsibilities- Serve as a clinical research leader to internal and external staff regarding study procedures, process monitoring, workflow management, and complex protocol implementation.
- Provide leadership and management of education and execution of research coordinator responsibilities.
- Establish strategic plans, policies, and procedures to support research goals and objectives.
- Disseminate critical clinical and operational updates from the hospital and research institute to teams in real-time.
- Assist principal investigators in identifying new funding opportunities, preparing applications, and managing existing grants and contracts.
- Implement and interpret research and financial policies in conjunction with the Research Business Operations (RBO) offices and the Office of Clinical and Community Trials (OCCT).
- Provide oversight and accuracy for all grant/gift account charges including salary and miscellaneous expenses.
- Review and coordinate time and effort reporting for faculty and clinical research staff.
- Manage pre‑award and post‑award activities related to sponsored research proposals and projects.
- Facilitate contract negotiations, execution, accrual tracking, and financial reconciliation with RBO and OCCT.
- Monitor study funds, reconcile faculty and staff salaries, subcontractor invoices, sponsor payments, and other allocable expenses to ensure financial compliance.
- Coordinate study documentation and participant tracking in Lurie systems (study intake, eRegulatory, eRA, CTMS, Epic, etc.).
- Prepare and submit regulatory documents to government and/or sponsor, and oversee other research staff responsible for regulatory compliance.
- Lead audits and participate in discussions with regulatory authorities.
- Partner with the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) to ensure compliant research execution.
- Lead or participate in division research meetings and sponsor study meetings/teleconferences.
- Promote the research program through local and national meetings; aid faculty in publishing and presenting results.
- Recruit, supervise, and mentor research personnel, providing training, development, and professional growth opportunities.
- Hold authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write, and administer performance evaluations.
- Minimum 5 years of research experience with a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree and/or research certification preferred).
- Expert knowledge of FDA and GCP guidelines.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage simultaneous project plans and personnel.
- Strong analytical ability; interpret financial data; solid quantitative and qualitative skills.
- Effective communication skills in a leadership role; ability to work with clinical, business, and administrative staff.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
