Security Officer Sergeant

Responsibilities

• Conduct training for new cadets and provide ongoing in-service training for Security Services staff.
• Provide leadership to lower ranking Security Officers through counseling, mentorship, and ongoing training resources.
• Perform supervisory duties when a Supervisor is absent.
• Schedule and direct work assignments for lower ranking Security Officers.
• Enforce Medical Center policies, guidelines, and procedures, serving as the source of authority.
• Perform on‑foot patrols of Medical Center campuses as directed by the Director of Security or designate.
• Report safety and fire hazards observed on routine patrols and inspections; identify violations of the Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA, and local Fire Code.
• Maintain constant communications with the Security Control Center.
• Assist clinical staff with psychiatric patient restraint, monitor and mitigate combative patients, escort patients during clinical transport, and observe patients under medical or psychiatric restrictions.
• Perform emergency responses, including distress calls, panic alarms, fire and disaster response, and support on-site emergencies such as bomb threats, patient abduction, weapon incidents, and hazardous materials.
• Physically intervene to remove unauthorized persons from hospital property, intervene with disruptive adults, confront individuals suspected of criminal acts, substance use, or disorderly conduct.
• Operate locks or unlock specified entrances/exits and perform access control duties at assigned posts.
• Ensure only authorized personnel are admitted; confront unauthorized persons for questions, routing, or detainment as appropriate.
• Dispatch Security Control room operations using Computer‑Aided‑Dispatch systems, monitor CCTV, radio transmissions, alarm consoles, and customer phone calls.
• Utilize incident report software to complete reports, maintain records, and assist the department with data collection.
• Apart from the above duties, appear in court on behalf of the Medical Center to enforce prosecution of individuals for assault or criminal trespass.
• Direct traffic on campus property and control parking, enforce parking guidelines for visitors, contractors, and employees.
• Serve as a resource of information for patients, parents, visitors, and employees, escorting them as needed.
• Secure lost and found items and maintain logs of received items.
• Enhance personal professional growth and maintain currency in the security field through voluntary participation in educational programs and departmental training sessions.
• Operate the hospital shuttle vehicle when required, ensuring safe compliance with all traffic laws.
• Consistently demonstrate customer service values and goals, adhering to service principles with a focus on innovation, excellence, and teamwork to serve patients, families, co‑workers, and others.

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Minimum of three years of security experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
• Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
• International Association for Hospital Security and Safety (IAHSS) supervisory training certification (required).
• Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with strong English reading, writing, and comprehension.
• Computer literate with working knowledge of Windows‑based software applications and typing ability.
• Excellent customer service skills.

Compensation: Pay Range $21.00 – $32.55 per hour. The range reflects minimum and maximum targets for the position and is regularly reviewed to align with market conditions.
