The Study at University of Chicago
seeks a dependable, observant, service-oriented Security Officer to join our hotel team. This position helps maintain a safe and secure environment for our guests, team members, and hotel property through routine patrols, monitoring, incident response, and a visible presence throughout the hotel.
The ideal candidate is calm, professional, and attentive, with the judgment to recognize and respond appropriately to potential safety or security concerns. Because security in a hospitality environment is also a guest-facing role, we are looking for someone who can balance vigilance and accountability with a welcoming and helpful approach.
Our caring and attentive associates reinforce our belief that guest service is our highest priority. The Security Officer works closely with hotel departments to help protect our guests and team members while contributing to a comfortable, well-maintained, and welcoming hotel environment.
Responsibilities- Conduct routine patrols of hotel interiors and exteriors to identify suspicious activity, security concerns, safety hazards, or other unusual conditions.
- Monitor CCTV and surveillance systems and respond appropriately to unusual or suspicious activity.
- Maintain a visible and professional security presence throughout the property.
- Monitor hotel entry points, verify vendor credentials, and help prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Respond to emergencies including fire alarms, medical incidents, disturbances, accidents, and other safety or security concerns.
- Document security incidents, emergencies, accidents, guest complaints, and other relevant activity through clear and detailed written reports.
- Respond to and help resolve guest or team member disputes and disturbances while maintaining a calm, professional, and safe environment.
- Provide escorts, directions, assistance, and security guidance to guests and team members as needed.
- Assist with investigations involving accidents, theft, property loss, safety concerns, or other security-related incidents.
- Maintain departmental key control procedures, complete required key audits, and maintain accurate key control records.
- Ensure meeting and event spaces remain secured when not in use.
- Escort individuals from the property when necessary and appropriate.
- Identify maintenance, cleanliness, or safety concerns during property patrols and communicate them to the appropriate hotel department.
- Assist with light upkeep of guest and public areas during slower periods, including removing debris and addressing minor cleanliness needs when appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling guest, team member, or hotel security matters.
- Work collaboratively with Front Office, Housekeeping, Engineering, Food & Beverage, and hotel leadership to support overall property safety and guest service.
- Follow established hotel emergency, safety, security, and incident-response procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned based on hotel and operational needs.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 1 year of previous security, hospitality, public safety, military, or related experience preferred.
- Ability to remain observant, calm, professional, and composed when responding to emergencies, disturbances, or challenging situations.
- Strong judgment and situational awareness with the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to potential safety and security concerns.
- Friendly, courteous, and professional demeanor with an understanding of security within a guest-service environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and accurate incident reports.
- Strong organizational and follow-up skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced hotel environment.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with guests, team members, vendors, hotel leadership, and emergency responders.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule based on hotel needs, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
- Proficiency in English required;
Spanish language proficiency is a plus. - Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout an 8+ hour shift.
- Ability to conduct interior and exterior property rounds in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Satisfactory completion of required pre-employment background screening.
