Overview
A Telecommunications Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and testing of complex telecommunications equipment in Central Office, Data Center, and other network environments. This role requires a strong understanding of telecommunications installation standards, including Telcordia GR-1275-CORE, and carrier-specific guidelines. The Lead Installer oversees the work of junior installers and acts as a key point of contact for project stakeholders.

- 1099 Contractor
- Pay: $18.00 - $45.00 per hour (dependent upon assessed skill)
- Schedule:
- 8-hour shift Monday – Friday
- 10-hour shift Monday – Thursday
- Dependent upon the needs of the job/project

- Material Handling:
Load, unload, and transport materials, tools and equipment for installing and decommissioning. - Site Preparation:
Safely secure and prepare work sites, including safety signage, barriers, and traffic control measures as needed. - Installation & Decommission Assistance:
Assist with the systematic installation and decommissioning of telecommunications equipment, including:- Cabling (copper, fiber optic, coaxial)
- Installing & removing equipment from cabinets & racks, co-locations, & data centers
- Installing & removing network infrastructure (routers, servers, patch panels, and related hardware)
- Maintain a clean and organized work area at job sites and in telecommunications facilities.
- Equipment Operation:
Use hand and power tools, and potentially heavy machinery, to assist with installations, demolition, material handling, and equipment removal. - Site Restoration:
Clean up and restore work areas after installations and decommissioning; ensure proper disposal of waste and debris. - Working at Heights:
Ability to climb ladders or use lifts as needed. - Understanding Procedures & Processes:
Knowledge of established installation and decommissioning techniques for various projects. - Continuous Learning:
Willingness to learn new technologies and techniques for career growth.
- Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of digital infrastructure experience with expert-level proficiency in telecommunications equipment installation; experience in ISP/Central Office/Headend/Data Center facilities is strongly preferred. - Physical placement, removal, and modification of telecommunications equipment (fiber and transport equipment, DC power systems, grounding, cable trays & cable management, iron work, ladder rack, data cabinets, data racks, servers, switches, and routers).
- Proficiency in all Level I & II Technician tasks and the ability to work with no supervision on passive systems.
- Ability to lead, train and mentor Level I & II installers on installation & decommission projects.
- Identify, label, measure, terminate, and route cables for AC/DC power or data transmission; ensure compliance with specifications and industry best practices.
- Produce, read and interpret detailed specifications, drawings, and Method of Procedures (MOPs). Perform quality validation and complete required documentation; resolve discrepancies and ensure quality inspections.
- Adhere to and enforce safety policies, including OSHA regulations, and supervise overall safety.
- Serve as a key point of contact for customers, engineers, and project managers; provide updates and resolve issues.
- Manage inventory and staging of equipment and materials.
- installation and dressing of CAT5/6 and fiber network cabling.
- Perform basic network cable testing and DC power installation.
- Adding/removing cabling on non-working & working equipment.
- Supporting network testing and fiber prep work in network facilities.
- Skill in utilizing test equipment for troubleshooting.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Physical strength and stamina: ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds frequently), stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and work.
- Mechanical aptitude & manual dexterity: familiarity with and ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and basic construction equipment.
- Dependability: reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Teamwork and communication: collaborate effectively with team members, follow instructions, and communicate clearly to ensure coordinated work execution.
- Problem-solving: ability to recognize problems and assist technicians in finding solutions.
Skills & Qualifications
- Prior decommissioning experience in telecommunications installations & decommissioning is beneficial.
- Certifications in safety training (e.g., OSHA) or specialized equipment operation are advantageous.
